Great Hotel
Very nice hotel, great location, nice room with simple modern furniture (pillows are a bit small), great washroom, best shower in our whole trip, nice white towels and lots of soaps and shampoo etc. Wonderful buffet breakfast, nice staff (a bit shy, but very helpful). Also the help for Visa service was GREAT! Will definitely go back to this hotel. The shopping area adjacent is great especially the 24hr. grocery store, great coffee shops on the street and a stone's throw to Nevesky Prospect which is the heart of St.Petersburg. Wonderful city.

"Handy location"
The hotel is about 5 minutes' walk from Nevsky Prospekt which is the main street in St Petersburg. It's right next door to the Metro station too but the Metro in this city isn't anywhere near as good as Moscow, for example. You can get busses up and down Nevsky for 12 roubles per journey so if you're only interested in the main attractions, this hotel is handy. Personally I found the food in Russia very difficult and Nevsky Prospekt was a God-send as there's a Pizza Hut, Subway, KFC and of course McDonalds. Not my usual choice of eateries but it beats pork fat and salt sanwiches. The rooms were a little tight and they have laminated floors which is odd and a bit dangerous. When coming in in wet boots (which you're bound to do at some point), it means the floor has little puddles all over and can get very slippy. The room and the bathroom were spotlessly clean and everything worked fine. The TV had BBC World which is good for English speakers wanting to catch up on current events, but there's little else entertaining. The hotel is big and it stretches far back so it can be a few minutes' walk to your room. Only really a problem if you're carting heavy luggage. The breakfast selection was good and not too wierd for English people. There was the usual aray of salads and cooked meats for the continental Europeans but they also had familiar cereals, crepes, toast, yoghurt, fruit etc. Reasonalbe fare in a country clueless about cuisine. We didn't dine in the restaurants as we were keen to get out into the city. Tip: for Western food, try the Liverpool bar, just off Nevsky Prospekt. A good night out if you like the Beatles. On the whole, clean, warm, safe and fairly priced.

"Great value in winter"
I found the Dostoevsky Hotel to be excellent value for money, since rates are halved if you can brave the -21C February freeze. The average quality of the breakfasts was compensated for by the wide range. Any hotel that gives me unlimited kiwi fruit is OK by me. The room was kept spotless by the staff despite my occasional dragging ice and slush back in. The restaurant and reception staff were very professional and helpful. The location near the metro and Nevsky Prospekt was very central, allowing late evening trips to the opera and concerts.

"Central location"
Quite a large hotel in a central location but we found the room to be quiet with a good standard of facilities including air con.The buffet breakfasts are extensive with plenty to set you up for the day. Sometimes the breakfast staff struggle to quickly clear the tables and there may be a slight wait while the buffet is kept stocked with cutlery, plates ,juice, hot water etc. The premises is maintained to a high standard and the staff cope well dealing with the many visitors that arrive-many by tour coach. The nearby 24hr modern supermarket is very handy. The price was reasonable in comparison to other centrally based hotels. The staff were quick to arrange taxis at reasonable cost for the airport and theater.

"Downtown, modern rooms; great friendly service"
I have previously visited St Petersburg and had the misfortune to stay at the infamous old style soviet type, The Hotel Moscow - believe me this was not good and by looking at recent reports it continues to be bad. My advice to anyone planning a trip to St Petersburg, as part of a package tour, is to pay the extra (typically + £60/$120 pp based on a 4 night stay) to stay at the Dostoevsky hotel. You will not regret it. The Dostoevsky Hotel was really great. Downtown, clean and modern rooms, and with great friendly service. The restaurant food was excellent as was the food we had in the bar area. The hotel also has the added benefit of being within a mall complex. There is a top quality supermarket on the ground floor where you can buy drinks, snacks etc. And if you visit in the winter months the whole mall/ hotel area is lovely and warm.
