"Nice condo to stay in Banff"
We stayed in a 2-level condo at the Douglas Fir, and it worked quite well for our group of 4. The upper level has 2 beds and there is a downstairs bedroom, and 1 1/2 baths. There is a wood-burning fireplace (wood provided) and small kitchen. The pools are nice, though the waterslides were not operative during part of our stay, causing anger and requests for reductions in rates from many parents. It is about a 15 minute walk to town, and on the convenient bus line as well. A small grocery and liquor store are onsite. There is no restaurant, but there are two in another place across the street. They did strike us as somewhat poorly managed. When we checked in, they did not have our reservation, which we'd made via the AAA site. (Don't know if the problem was with them or AAA.) They were able to get us accomodations, but we waited for quite a while after the regular check-in time to get in to the unit, not a good first impression for tired travelers. And we got some inconsistent answers to questions and requests for booking assistance from front desk staff.

"Great for families - but don't expect luxury"
We stayed here for 7 nights on a family vacation - 2 children, aged 3 and 1. The key reason for the grading is that it is ideal for families. Personally, for a week I really don't want to be stuck in a single room + bathroom with children, and having a kitchen gives you the extra flexibility. We stayed in a 2 bedroom A-Frame chalet (would recommend asking for either 115, 116 or 117, which are all on the edge of the forest - we had elk wandering by our chalet one night). Not hugely spacious, but clean, good shower, and comfortable beds. Would agree with some of the comments about the staff - not rude but just not overly helpful. The waterslides could do with a lick of paint, but it didn't stop our 3 year old enjoying them immensely. The indoor child play area is brand new and again, great for entertaining the younger ones. If you really want luxury look elsewhere, but would thoroughly recommend for a family with young children.

"Value for Money"
We chose to stay at Douglas Fir as most travellers on this site recommended it for families. We were two families with 6 kids from 7 to 18 yrs travelled in mid January. The condos were clean and presentable, warm & cosy with a fireplace. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was do-able. The indoor swimming pool was a hit with the kids although it was cold getting into & out of the pool area. The staff were friendly and we had room service every day. The bins and dishwasher were emptied after we left the building. Fresh towels everyday, beds made & rooms tided. We cooked every second nite and ate out alternate nites. As it was too cold to wait for the bus in the evenings, we cabbed it downtown for $6/7 but had to get 2 taxis each time. It was difficult to get a taxi bus that can take all 10 of us in one trip. We found the locals and retailers very friendly and helpful - we also met a lot of Aussies who lived there for several months. It was our ski trip of a lifetime and couldn't have asked for better ski conditions. Our package included 7 nites accommodation with a breakfast basket (consisted cereal, eggs, bacon bread and milk), ski hire and ski lift tickets for 6 days. We loved that we had 3 mountains to choose from and our favourite was Sunshine. Some of us took the afternoon off skiing and got the complimentry shuttle to the frozen Lake Louise and Chateu-it was worth the visit -shame they didn't have skates for hire. Mt Norquay was our first ski run and it had great beginner runs for the kids to get their ski legs and confidence. Also it wasn't as busy as the other two resorts. The down side with staying at Tunnel Mountain Road is having to load and unload our ski gear, twice daily each way. First onto the shuttles that takes us downtown, and secondly onto the coaches to and from the ski fields. We did not pay for 5 star but felt it was value for money and would stay at Douglas Fir again, however the condos could do with a make over.

"My family loved this place!"
My wife, kids and I just spent a week at Douglas fir resort, The kids loved the waterpark and were pleasantly suprised by the opening of a giant indoor playground on our last day there. Our One Bedroom condo was quite large and had everything our family needed. While this place is not a luxury resort it is perfect for families.
