"The Downtown is fine!"
We stayed at the Downtown for a week in mid-September and want to reassure other potential visitors that it is absolutely fine! For the price, I don't see how anyone could want more. ALL the staff were absolutely lovely, the room was large, with a balcony, great bathroom and scrupulously clean. Ate several times in the cafe/restaurant and was impressed! Neither of us were ill at all(!), the portions were large, freshly cooked, very very tasty and very reasonable - otherwise we wouldn't have gone back.
We seemed to be the only British residents at the time but everyone was wonderful to us. Also, it's ideally situated for a base to explore both the town itself and Gozo - either by car (which we did), or bus.
The only (very slight) niggle is that at weekends the hotel is used by Maltese families and the children running about can sometimes be a bit wearing - but then, what can you expect? And the fact that local families use the hotel does, I think, speak volumes for its quality and friendliness.
I was worried before we went having read some of the negative reports on this site, but I needn't have been - it was great and I would certainly return.

"Good Value, Simple Comfortable Accomodation"
This review is based on a three-night stay on BB basis in March 2007. As far as I am aware, this hotel is unique in being located within walking distance of Victoria centre (5-10 minutes from the Citadel and a similar distance from the bus station), but with adequate street parking.
Booked a twin room with balcony and expected this to be rear-facing with a view over open countryside, but allocated a front room with view over street, school complex and sports centre (none of which were a problem). Balcony proved to be a sun trap and I would actually opt for front room in future. Room itself was of a good size, nicely furnished with a lot of natural wood. No problems with cleanliness.
Breakfast adeqate for a three-star hotel, but not exceptional and sometimes not ready at the advertised time. Did not sample the restaurant but cafe was excellent (just as well as Gozo seems to close once the day trippers go home). Other than that, very limited facilities but lacking nothing that I needed. This hotel delivers exactly what it promises - no more and no less.
Overall very good value. Would definately stay again mid-week but am not sure whether the basement disco would be a problem at weekends.

"Nice place, nice people"
We stayed at Downtown for three nights on B & B basis and really enjoyed ourselves. The location is ideal for exploring Gozo if you do not have use of a car as all buses go from Victoria terminus (less than 10 minutes walk from the hotel). The receptionist was very helpful, providing bus timetables for us.
The room we stayed in was spacious and airy with a balcony. The bathroom was very big...could almost fit two baths in there! There was almost everything you could expect from hotel room, air conditioning, hairdryer, mini bar etc. the one thing that I would have liked was a safe deposit box. The room was cleaned daily and fresh towels provided.
The breakfast is served in the restaurant until 9.30am and consisted of cold meats, cheese, fruit, yoghurt as well as hot food like bacon, sausages, it was very tasty. The restaurant also provided buffet dinners. There is also a cafe in the hotel which has good selection of pizzas, snacks and drinks, served all day and stays open quite late. The service in the cafe was excellent.
There is a rooftop pool but it is quite small, there is a jacuzzi in it and a shallow part for children. The view from the rooftop terrace is very good, particularly in the evening when the Citadel was lit up.
We really enjoyed our stay here, the service was great, and everyone was very friendly. Would recommend it to anyone.

"no better place to stay"
The Downtown Hotel was so much more than we could have asked for for $50.00 a night. The room we stayed in for 4 nights was extrememly clean, with air conditioning, and very nice airy cielings. Breakfast was included in the price and the breakfast was very nice, with cereal and the choice of a full english breakfast. The staff was very kind and helpful, our room was cleaned every day with fresh towels given. The location is nice and quiet and the center of victoria is a 10 minute walk away. We stayed in hotels at twice the price as this one and got less than a fraction of the service. You will not be let down if you stay here.

"very satisfied"
I stayed at this hotel with my husband and daughter before Easter and found it very good. We had absolutely no problems. All the staff were very attentive and the food for breakfast was good. We had drinks and food in the coffee shop and found it good and very reasonably priced. In fact I would think it was cleaner than a lot of places I have eaten in over the past on the island. The bedrooms while not huge were sufficient with good lighting and a nice clean well tiled bathroom. The outdoor seating was very pleasant and the coffee shop was very busy, with a lot of the custom local, this for me speaks for itself. While it is not on the beach it is well placed for a city break with Rabat on its doorstep. Would have no hesitation in staying again
