Hotel Edda Laugar i Saelingsdal, set amid the rugged greenery of west Iceland, is an ideal place to relax in peaceful rural surroundings. This modern Scandinavian-style property occupies a spread over two floors.
The region’s history is deeply rooted in the Icelandic Sagas, with Laugar near its centre. Laugar means “warm springs”, still popular in the Snaefellsnes peninsula’s unspoiled surroundings. Another favourite is the Leifur Eiriksson museum, dedicated to the first oldworld man to discover America. A boat trip on Breidafjordur is a must-do, sailing amongst countless small islands on this beautiful fjord.
Laugar is one of two farms in the Saelingsdalur valley. The other, Saelingsdalstunga, was the home of Gudrun Osvifursdottir, one of the protagonists of Laxdaela saga. Traces are still visible of a church built at Saelingsdalstunga by the chieftain Snorri, who lived there before Gudrun. Her father lived at Laugar.
Laugar (Warm Springs) derives its name from two springs that provide water at a temperature of 60°C. The sagas mention a bathing pool at Laugar in olden times; traces of old structures remain at one of the springs, which is now largely covered by a landslide, and this is believed to have been the old bathing spring. The other spring is used to heat the buildings and swimming pool at Laugar. The Dalasysla Folk Museum at Laugar contains various items of historical interest.
The picturesque country around Laugar makes for pleasant excursions, whether by car or on foot. An easy walk from Laugar is Tungustapi, a rocky outcrop which, according to folklore, is an elven church.
At Eiriksstadir in Haukadalur, a replica of a Saga Age farmstead has been built, to commemorate Eirikur (Erik) the Red, settler of Greenland, and his son Leifur Eiriksson (Leif the Lucky), who discovered America around 1000 AD.
