Now a more peaceful place with the secluded Vatnsnes peninsula and brooding basalt cliffs at Hvitserkur exuding natural calm. Hot springs at Laugarbakki provide enough hot water to heat the community of Hvammstangi; the hot water is also used to heat greenhouses at Laugarbakki. The community has a sports hall, hot pots, camping site, community centre and food store. Angling licences for the lakes and rivers of Arnarvatnsheidi are sold at Laugarbakki.
Various places of interest are within an easy distance of Laugarbakki, such as Vatnsnes and Vatnsdalur, where remains of medieval buildings have been excavated at As.
Borgarvirki, a man-made fortification that dates back to the early years of Iceland’s history, is among the historic sites in the region. Natural features include the bizarre offshore rock formation Hvitserkur, and Kattarauga (Cat’s Eye), a deep pool in the Kornsa river, with two floating islands.
