Hotel Edda ML Laugarvatn is South Iceland's beautiful setting and the perfect base for touring Iceland’s most popular natural wonders: The Golden Circle of mighty Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir hot springs and Thingvellir National Park in Iceland - the ancient site of the world’s first parliament. A natural steam bath, basically a shed built on top of a hot-spring, makes for the perfect relaxation after a hard days journey.
Vigdalaug (Sacred Pool) at Laugarvatn is a geothermal spring which is reputed to have healing powers. Tradition says that when the Icelanders adopted the Christian religion in 1000 AD, by a decision of parliament at Thingvellir, some of them chose to be baptised in the warm waters of this spring, and not in the chilly lake water at Thingvellir.
About 5-6 km west of Laugarvatn is Laugarvatnsvellir (Laugarvatn Plains), a commonly-travelled route in olden times. The Gjabakkavegur upland route to Thingvellir passes through Laugarvatnsvellir. Two caves along the route were inhabited by a couple in the early part of the 20th century, until 1922; the woman gave birth to a child when she was living in the cave.
Laugarvatn offers a beautiful environment for visitors to enjoy, and is within easy reach of many of the principal attractions of South Iceland, such as Gullfoss waterfall, the Geysir hot springs, the old parliamentary site at Thingvellir and Skalholt Cathedral.
