"Great hotel, the staff are brilliant - big improvement in the last year"
My husband and I got married at the Ellersly in August 2006. I couldn't have asked for better service from the Ellersly staff - I truely expected something to go wrong (doesn't it always at weddings?!?) but hand on heart not one thing went other than according to plan. From the first day I visited they were offered an excellent level of customer service, right through to the wedding and beyond. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff for us or any of our guests. The hotel has had a lot of work done on it, and my personal experience of both the standard rooms and the suites was that they were well-decorated and homey. The standard rooms are not the largest, but they are still perfectly adequate and have gorgeous bathrooms.
What sold it for me was that my maid of honour booked a standard room and they upgraded her to the other honeymoon suite free of charge without telling any of us as a surprise. In the middle of the Edinburgh Festival when they could sell that room for an awful lot more than my friend paid for it (since she paid standard rates) I think that's pretty good customer service.
It has a nice lounge and bar (which sells drinks at reasonable prices rather than hotel bar prices - I was shocked!), and a beautiful garden for sitting out in those summer evenings. It is a beautiful old building and though it is not in the immediate city centre it is right on a bus route and is only five minutes by bus right to the heart of the city. And the breakfast was cracking too!
Can't recommend it highly enough. I'll stop now before I gush any more! Seriously, I know it's not the cheapest hotel in Edinburgh, but I'd recommend here above the city centre hotels.

"Very good!"
would recommend staying here - its a short bus / taxi ride out of town but offers excellent, tasteful and well-priced accommodation. I paid £79 p.n, terrific value and a superb breakfast too.

"Great place & affordable..."
stayed at the Ellersly Hotel. It's a nice boutique type hotel with great full breakfast: cereal, poached eggs, toast, saugage, tomatos, mushrooms, ham, various juices and the blood sausage. You also get a free pot of great coffee or tea.
I tipped my hostness 1 GBP for service, because breakfast was free, but I didn't see anyone else do it. I mean they do bring you a pot of coffee/tea and bus your dishes so it's not all self-serve.
A full breakfast really saves you a lot of money. Most of the time the food is set out in buffet, but on some days you order your breakfast from the hostess. You can tailor the breakfast and ask them not to give you beans, blood sausage, etc.
The seating area where you have breakfast is beautiful. It's a nice place start your morning.
The rooms are small, but it's kept very clean. They only offer a couple of channels and the rest a pay-preview movies. It's not a good hotel if you want to come home to access many cable channels.
