"A Very Pleasant Stay"
We visited Orient Beach for the 4th time in May and stayed at Esmeralda for the 1st time. Probably not the last. I don't have much to add to the previous reviews. We also stayed in the lowest grade room and found it more than suitable. Clean, quiet and comfortable. The almost private pool was especially welcome and it made for easy late evening or early morning swims to cool off or just for fun. The lounge chairs around it made for a pleasant, shady respite from the hot sun at midday and we never had to share the space with others. We spent the entire week in the Baie Orientale area as the beach restaurants provide great lunches at varying prices (some near the more crowded south end of the beach are almost reasonably priced) and for dinners the restaurants around the square in the village (a 10 minute walk at most) were more than satisfactory with prices lower than those in Grand Case. The small grocery store provided wine, beer, bread, milk and other basics. L'Astrolabe (Esmeralda's own restaurant) proved to be an excellent choice one evening (it also had special lobster and surf and turf nights with live music) . The restaurant at La Plantation almost directly across the road was also very good, and very close. The staff at the hotel and at Coco Beach were very friendly and helpful (they didn't even laugh at me...at least not while I was within earshot.... when they had to send someone to open the room safe that I had somehow managed to lock without knowing the combination ). Instead of being upset by the early morning naturists I would recommend joining them and maybe going down to Club O for a skinny dip sometime during the day. No one will worry about what you look like or what you are or are not wearing and the feeling of freedom just might motivate you to to join them for a morning stroll while the temperatures are moderate and the sand gravity hasn't become too strong.

"intimate villas"
a recent stay may 25-30th 2007...we enjoyed our one bedroom villa. the shower was a joy, very large nicely tiled and open .we made breakfast in the room each morning and wine and cheese on our patio each eve.nice outdoor furniture.. orient beach is quite builtup since our prior trip of many years ago.this hotels location on orient is perfect, far enough from the activities ,but close enough if the need arises.. coco beach resturant was excellent for all meals.Very easy access to beach chairs and umbrellas as well as excellent chair side service......... security is very much present in the evening/night.we felt very safe. our villas pool was clean and very much appreciated after a long day at the beach. The french side of the island is still enjoyable.many wonderful dinners in Grand case.the dutch side of the island feels like Lasvegas.will never return to that side again.

"Everything we expected it to be"
Just returned from a 6 night stay @ Esmeralda Resort. We found the resort to be all we expected from reviews we read and from previous Carribbean Island trips. The Esmeralda is like almost all your beachfront, lowrise island hotels. It has the required 15-20 coats of paint on everything and it is not brand new, and yes, some areas outside could use some sprucing up, but, you must realize what any property owner on the ocean is up against in regards to sand, salt, moisture, and the occasional hurricane. We found the inside of our room and the patio area to be extremely clean at check in and were very very pleased with the housekeeping staff keeping it that way. Sheets were changed every 2 days, all our sand was cleaned from the tile floors daily, etc. I do know they did have issues with the WiFi while we were there and our room did not have a microwave but these were no big issue with us. The exterior landscaping was, well, let's just say it wasn't DisneyWorld groundskeeping, but once again, you must consider what they are up against and the landscaping is comperable to anywhere else on the island. I read many reviews complaining about the sparsely furnished rooms. In my opinion, our room was so HUGE, the furniture was lost. We had the required King bed, table with 2 cushioned chairs, 1 lounge chair, large closet, large clothes cabinet, 6 drawer dresser with TV, and mini kitchenette in the corner. All this in one room yet you could have easily placed a second King bed in the room and not been crowded. I would estimate our Deluxe room to have had 800-900 s.f. including the bathroom, so I think what some people construe as sparse is actually not realizing how much space is in the room. I'm not trying to sell you on Esmeralda, but my wife & I have done more than our share of vacation travel, much in the Carribbean, and this resort was everything we had come to expect from an island vacation. There were definitely many other resorts we drove by and remarked, "glad we didn't book that one". My advice for anyone considering visiting SXM is to be aware that with the exception of maybe 2 mega expensive modern resorts on the island, you should not expect to find ultra modern, full of aminities, type resorts here. Expect laid back people, laid back resorts, crazy drivers, beautiful beaches, and try to take a laid back attitude yourself, and you will not be dissappointed. As for thin walls, we never heard any of our neighbors, so this must only be an issue in certain villas. I will add that we were blessed to be booked into Villa #47 which is probably the closest villa to the ocean. I would recommend requesting a gauranteed room in either Villa #46 or #47 for close beach access. The agent we booked with recommended this and secured the guarantee for us. Coco Beach Rest. was great for breakfast and lunch. We did not try the onsite restaurant, LAstrolabe, as I am more of an American meat & potatoe kind of guy.

"What we were looking for."
Just now getting around to writing our review on Esmeralda from our stay in mid June. Having taken away so much from this site it is nice to be able to hopefully contribute. It has been well documented that this resort is a little ‘long in the tooth’ so to speak and that proved to be true. However, during our stay, everything was well maintained. It is a little rustic and dated but it was exactly what we were looking for….a quite little resort near the beach. The staff was always friendly when approached. They assisted us in locating an adapter that could run a blender, and even ordering a pizza for us from a place that did not have anyone that spoke English. We really enjoyed our villa’s pool. We went out to meet our neighbors on day 2 and they were in the pool… their suits, however, were not. A bit awkward. They asked if that was a problem and apologized for not asking first. We told them no problem at all…. The next day, and the rest of the week, we joined them. We went jogging early every morning. Our first morning jogging on the beach we found about every other couple was nude. This would end though around 8:30ish. On the first day it was weird to say the least. The 2nd morning it wasn’t near a big a deal as the first. The 3rd morning it was almost not even noticed. That is when the question hit me… why am I jogging on vacation. The beach in front of Esmeralda was very well maintained and beautiful. At our time of visit Coco Beach had the most ‘sand area’ of Orient. The beach would get narrow as you went up the beach. The staff at the beach was ‘ok’. They hardly ever came around but that was ok with us. That was much better than being asked every 20 minutes if you want another drink. I have read they don’t allow you to bring your own drinks… we carried water with us every day. No big deal… for water anyway. There was a ‘clothing optional’ area to the left that was occupied by anywhere from 6 – 10 guests during our stay. The rest of Coco would have 10 – 20 guests with maybe half or better topless. There was much room between guests, which was not the case at other resorts. Long story short… Room – huge and a little dated, Beds –HARD, Pool – small, private in our villa TV-only turned on once and HBO in English Front desk – helpful if you need them, housekeeping - perfect When we go back to St. Maarten we will be booking at Esmeralda if at all possible.
