"Grand Hotel!" We stayed in The Grand for 2 nights over Easter. The rooms were lovely, perhaps a little small but it certainly wasn't a problem. We had 2 rooms, one overlooked the lovely garden in the central courtyard, the other looked out to a small side street. As the person who had organised everything I was a bit miffed it was our room that had the non-view! Bed was super-comfortable, Quality toiletries in the bathroom. Lots of towels and 2 big bath robes. Pool was very small, but steam room and sauna were welcome. Cocktails in the bar were great, the chocatini comes highly recommended! We had the Sunday Brunch the day we checked out. Well worth the money, it was an impressive spread. One problem I had was that the Hotel had mistakenly taken 500 euro's from my credit card then paid it back. Of course this resulted in less pounds going back in due to the difference in buy/sell currency rates. I raised this issue with the hotel on check out and asked that the bill be adjusted accordingly. It took quite a while for the matter to be resolved but to give the hotel credit they did refund me the difference.

"Comfort with excellent service" We spent four nights at the Grand over Easter weekend. Room: Our junior suite was very spacious with large windows overlooking the canal. The room was extremely comfortable: great bed, spacious and well appointed bath. If only the decor was a little less bland: blond wood, glass tables, and print fabrics reminded me more of a suburban chain hotel than of a historic property in a fascinating city. (As an aside, why aren't there more affordable boutique design hotels in Amsterdam?) Public spaces: The public spaces were much more interesting than our room. Make sure to take a peek at the gorgeous conference rooms. The pool was nice to retreat to at the end of a busy day sightseeing, even if it did seem more like an oversized bathtub. The fitness room was much less attractive, located in a tiny hallway on the way to the pool. The restaurant where we had breakfast was lovely, but the staff seemed overwhelmed at breakfast time. Service: Excellent! The staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. They made everything easy, from finding a restaurant when we arrived late to renting bicycles. Location: Very centrally located. And the proximity of the red light district really isn't an issue -- we were able to avoid it completely, without any trouble. Overall, a very comfortable hotel in a great location with a wonderful staff. If it only had a little more sense of style. . .

"The Grand Amsterdam" Just back from a weekend at the The Grand with two other couples, the hotel itself is on a great site and very central. The rating is five star but is probably more like a very high four as some of the place is in need of a spruce up (its not in bad nick just not five star) however the staff more than made up for any slight shortfall with great service and lots of handy tips. The Sunday bruch is also a good way to come round after a heavy night with a great varied buffet and hair of the dog included in the price. If you have a Sofitel loyalty card the room upgrades a well worth it. We would go back again.
