"Great Location Great Room"
I was a bit apprehensive after I read the reviews on this hotel since we had already booked our vacation (through Air France Holidays). When we arrived at the hotel the lobby was beautiful and appeared to be 4 star quality. When we got to our room I was happy to see that it was modern clean and obviously recently remodeled. The bathrooms were all done in marble tile and the room was nicely decorated. My only complaint was that the mattress was not that great (seemed old/worn) but was not uncomfortable. The breakfast was great (we always ate late around 10am) and there was always plenty of food. The location was convenient to the bus station (5 minute walk) and about a 10 minute walk to the beach. We took bus 98 from the airport to the bus station and walked to the hotel from there. There is a lot of construction being done in the area around the hotel since they are building a new tram system so it does not look that great. Otherwise Nice is beautiful.

"Room Good-Great Restaurant"
We stayed at the Grand Hotel Aston as part of a tour package through the region. We spent two nights here. The entrance to the hotel was impressive and very elegant and clean in it's style. As a first impression walking in through the front doors, it was a good one.
The rooms were adequately sized with enough room to move around and to have a moderate sized table to sit comfortably while doing some work on the internet. Our room had a separate room for the toilet which made the bathroom more accessible when getting ready to go out. My only complaint was the carpet needed cleaning as you would find the bottoms of your feet or socks fairly dirty after a period of time.
I won't say the view out of the back of the hotel was anything to write home about. The rooms to the front have a much better view. But it was quiet.
Centrally located, it was a short walk to the beach and the market square. However, when we were there, the streets were still torn up by the installation of the rail/trolley system and navigating can be made more complicated by sections of sidewalks blocked off for the construction. When they finally complete this system, getting around should be greatly improved.
The breakfast buffet meal was good, but the true jewel was the restaurant (L'Horloge). With a four course meal at 24 Euros per person, it was absolutely incredible. We ate early by French standards and had a very leisurely dinner. We found the staff very helpful and the service outstanding as the staff attended to our needs.
The meal was excellent as we had one of their seafood dishes (with or without goose liver sauce, it was excellent). Since their menu changes, your choices will likely be different.
The creme brulee we each had for dessert was absolutely to die for. It was, by far, the best I have had anywhere. Some are "close" but none have matched.
While the hotel was good, this meal made the stay at the Grand Hotel Aston truly memorable.

: "Rooftop pool was an oasis of calm!"
We have just arrived back fron spending 5 nights in the Hotel Aston.
The hotel has a fantastic location close by to the old town which is the best side of Nice to be in. The rooftop pool at the Aston was an oasis of calm!
You had to pay 12 euros per day for the privelege which included pool access, sunbed use and free water....if you've a day free don't miss out on a chillout day on the rooftop with amazing views across nice.
