Hotel Information
Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is poised where it is said one of the villas of the Emperor Augustus once stood...

Owned by the Fiorentino family since 1834, and still operated by its descendents, Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is poised where it is said one of the villas of the Emperor Augustus once stood.

This renowned five-star luxurious hotel is perched atop the cliffs, commanding a spectacular view of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Beautiful gardens and a five-acre orange grove surround the hotel. Its gates open into the main square in Sorrento.

Refined guest accommodations evoke the atmosphere of a gracious private home, furnished with authentic period furniture. The elegantly furnished suites include the famous Pompei Suite, the world-known Enrico Caruso Suites, the luxurious Imperial Suite and the impressive Princess Margaret Suite. A prive lift takes guests down to the port where they can take the public hydrofoil for excursions to Capri, Ischia and Naples.

Five acres of luxuriant grounds full of beautiful Mediterranean plants and flowers, the gardens are an important part of Sorrento, containing a number of very old specimens and magnificent blooms. Guests can enjoy a stroll and admire the plants, or simply relax in the shade of the trees and take in the unparalleled beauty of the Bay of Naples. And with no shortage of different paths to follow, this is also the ideal place to take a jog or do a few keep-fit exercises in the open air.

LOCATION

Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is located in the town centre of Sorrento on the cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples. The building is secluded from the main square by private gardens with citrus groves. Guests pass through the main gate and through the gardens to find the Hotel right on the seafront of Sorrento.

PROPERTY AMENITIES

* The two Hotel restaurants are very different from one another. The main restaurant is the imposing "Vittoria" dining room with its original decorated ceilings of the early 19th century (the restaurant is air-conditioned). The "Bosquet" is a more intimate dining room, at its best in spring and summer when diners can enjoy the view from the beautiful terrace overlooking the Bay of Naples. Once a week during summer, a candle-lit buffet dinner is served to all guests on the panoramic "Vittoria Terrace". After dinner, with a live orchestra playing romantic melodies and the lights of Naples twinkling across the Bay, even the most reluctant dancer will surely take a turn on the floor.

* This property features massage and treatment rooms, beauty services, and a hair salon. In addition to a seasonal outdoor pool, Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria provides a health club and a children's pool.

* The meeting rooms are all tastefully decorated with frescoes and paintings so that delegates feel at ease while working. The hotel offers six different theatre style meeting rooms seating from 30 to 250. Audiovisual equipment of every kind can be supplied on request.

ROOM AMENITIES

* Grand Hotel comprising three different blocks built between 1834 and 1880. Precisely because of its unique layout, the hotel is able to offer a generous selection of rooms with a variety of features.

* Almost all rooms have a terrace or a balcony overlooking the Bay of Naples or the beautiful hotel grounds. All rooms have private bathroom, air conditioning, satellite TV, minibar, safe and direct-dial telephone.

"Undeserved Criticism for this Fine Hotel"
My wife and I were concerned about staying at this Hotel after reading the bad reviews posted here, but what a lovely place it was! We stayed at several hotels in our tour of Italy, but none was as spectacular as this hotel. This is, as noted, an older hotel, but the view, the service, the food, the ambiance, all were excellent. Our next visit to Italy will absolutely include a return visit to this Hotel. And yes, splurge for the view. It is well worth it!

"Christmas 2004"
Having stayed in our favourite Sorrento hotel several times during 2004, for a Christmas treat we decided to stay at the Excel Vitt. What a Christmas, absolutely marvellous. It has now made our other hotel seem rather ordinary, but for the summer it is nice and quietly positioned in St Agnello. At Christmas, it is better to be centrally positioned right on the square. We have already booked for December 2005 at the Hotel Ex Vitt, and are counting the days, despite the fact that we are returning to our other "Summer" hotel in three weeks time. The food at the Hotel Ex Vitt was absolutely mouth-watering. I am also a vegetarian but found extremely pleasant food on the menu, without having the chef make me special dishes. During our May stay in St Agnello, we treated ourselves to lunch at the ExVitt, and are looking forward to doing the same in a few weeks time. Yes, the hotel had an old-fashioned ambience about it, but we found the staff so friendly and helpful, and as I have said, the food worth going for, just in its own right. With regard another trip-advisor's comment about the other guests at the hotel, unfortunately you cannot choose who else is willing to pay to stay there. At Christmas, one of the few other english guests there, appeared to think every other word of her english language began with "f"and did not seem happy unless she had a "fag" hanging out of her mouth. We were very pleased when the waiter politely pointed out to her that the restaurant was non-smoking, and she had to stand on the terrace (in December) if she wanted a cigarette. Between each course, she went off onto the terrace for her "fag". We were extremely glad we did not have to suffer the smoke wafting over our lovely food at our meals.

"Class Act"
We had a beautiful but smallish room with balcony - and a view over the bay of Naples not to be believed. The common areas are gorgeous including an orange grove and other gardens with a guard to keep out the "riff-raff". The breakfast was complete with eggs and bacon, hot vegetables, cooked to order omelets, smoked salmon, cold meats, fruit platters, pastries etc. Friendly staff always make you feel welcome. A classy place for those who appreciate the finer touches.

"Truly Grand!"
We stayed here for 3 nights during our honeymoon, on the "Anniversary Package", which was expensive - but worth every penny. A taxi driver, included in the package, greeted us at Naples airport, and the hotel is a (somewhat precarious) 60 minutes drive away. Attention to detail was high - we were greeted at reception with a complimentary cocktail, and a wonderful surprise (which went much beyond just an ordinary bottle of champagne!) awaited us in our room later on our first day. The room was large, with very high ceilings, interesting decor and a massive balcony overlooking the Bay of Naples and the marina. The candlelight dinner, part of the package, but available to all, was fabulous. Breakfast, likewise, couldn't be faulted, and staff were courteous and helpful. We ended up spending each lunchtime at the poolside restaurant, which offered a limited, albeit very tasty selection of local food. The pool was large and clean, and rarely crowded. The hotel is located right in the centre of town, accessible via a very pleasant garden walkway, replete with lemon trees and rotund local cats. There are many pleasant cafes and restaurants in the town within a few minutes walk. A truly memorable hotel, and utterly recommended for any special occasion.
