"Good place for the money and a great location"
The hotel gets a mix of tour groups and solitary travelers, probably due to price and location. It's alright if you are on a reasonable budget and don't want to go too low-end.
The staff is competent and speaks English. We stayed on the first floor on the backside, which gave us a view of the water. It undoubtedly is better higher up and away from late-night clubs noise. That is because it is on a street running the ridge of a hill. We had a tiny balcony, just enough room for 2 chairs and a small table, but it was nice even if small, considering the price of the hotel. Breakfast was fine. The hotel is right off Taksim Square. Taksim, which is very accessible and central, is the old European quarter. It has lots of nice shopping, decent restaurants, clubs, plenty of people on the streets at night, and some old world charm remains. But is sort of like Times Square used to be. Don't expect too much. We considered staying over in the historic area across the Golden Horn, but realized we could be sort of trapped there at night. We are glad we did what we did, and just went over to see the sights on day trips.
Istanbul is a large and fascinating city of many contrasts - old and new, rich and poor, old world and modern, european and middle eastern, and there is plenty to see and do. We were lucky enought to have a local friend take us around, so saw many things an average tourist would never see. Our 3 days were not enough. I will be going back.
