"An excellent hotel for a first time visit to Milan"
I was a bit wary of how I would enjoy this hotel based on a few mixed reviews on this web site. This hotel did not let me down.
It is a nice clean, contempory hotel with a friendly staff.
Your adventure in Milan will probably start with a bus ride to the Central Station that is advertised as forty minutes but in reality is 90 minutes. Keep that in mind when you head back to the airport.
Having mapped the hotel and it's relation to the train station in advance, you should refer to a small light pocket compass to get you walking in the right direction. Ålways bring a compass when you travel. Streets are not always marked as they are in the USÅ.
This hotel is about a four block walk to the airport bus stop outside (by the side) the train station.
During the walk I felt safe but I noticed some people who just seemed to like to relax outside the station. Pack to protect your cell phone, wallet, camera and luggage against theft. I noticed a current newspaper article with a few photos of a young man brazenly pickpocketing women's purses at the train station.
Not being able to speak more than a few words of the local language, I found the concierge very helpful with information about booking my train to Florence. He even helped me read my ticket.
Here are a couple of rules about Eurostar trains in Italy:
Rule number 1. Don't wait til the day you leave to book your train ride. Lines are always longest for same day trips. Trains run pretty full too. You might not get a seat. Rule 2. If you are a tall man, don't go second class. By the way, second class cars on Eurostar are non-smoking. Probably the whole train is non-smoking now.
My room was typically a bit on the small side as most Italian rooms are and it had a typical bath/shower. What was funny is that there are instructions (in English and very small) on the shower tile about how to work the shower. The tub is on the small side. If you are a romantic bath taker, don't plan on something here. Book the Park Hyatt at twice the price. By the way this hotel has black out curtains that the Park Hyatt lacks.
A brand new lobby bar is open for business now. A bit pricey as most of such bars are.
One of the bellmen pointed out a pizza restaurant for me that was only a block or two away. You have to walk a bit but there are plenty of shops and restaurants in this part of the city. It is because of the Central Train station. Via Vitruvio, which runs in front of the hotel and train station leads right to Corso Buenos Aires which has lots of middle class shops, food stores and restaurants.
My check-in was no problem even though I arrived early. Check out was very fast. No shady "new expenses" added to the bill. It was all prepaid.

"Convenient hotel in convenient location"
I stayed at Hilton Milan with my wife for 4 nights in July 07.
Hotel surroundings are unspectacular at best, but the location is convenient both for traveling within Milan and for trips neighboring cities and lake Como. Main railway station (Milano Centrale) and Piazza Garibaldi station are 3 and 10 mins by foot from the hotel. Tram 2 that goes to the city center also stops near the hotel. Metro stop (at Milano Centrale) is the same 3 minutes by foot.
We arrived at 10:00 am but were immediately assigned a very big double room (I think it was a superior room, though we booked a simple double). The room was on the 4th floor with the windows to the open backyard (not a great view, but we don't spend much time at the hotel so this was not a problem). The room was nicely appointed with light beige colour spectrum. Air-conditioning was working well, which was important as the temperature outside was at time hitting +35 Celcius. Big bathroom with modern equipment and excellent water pressure (one of the best in my hotel experience, in fact).
To summarize, the room exceeded our expectations.
Hilton Milan has a free gym on the underground floor which we used every morning. The gym is well equipped (both aerobic and anaerobic machines), open round the clock never crowded.
Breakfast was excellent (esp. for a hotel in Italy), but pricey (27 euro) so I only recommend taking it if included in the rate. The selection was wide and quality of food great: salmon, prosciutto, fresh vegetables, ricotta cheese, all kind of fresh fruit (also strawberries), many sorts of bread and pastries, etc, etc.
Our only minor problem was the minibar - it had an automatic check-out system that doesn't allow taking items out, which means that we couldn't fit all our foodstuffs. We solved this by asking the reception to place our food into their fridge.
Hotel staff is not too friendly but efficient and helpful (e.g. they honoured my request for a late checkout: we were allowed to check out at 16:00) .
