LOCATION

Hotel Du Pont-Veiux is ideally located to visit the nagnificent city of Carcassonne. At the feet of the city walls. The crusade against the Albigensians, or Cathars, began in 1209 in Occitan country. Its aim was to destroy the Cathar heresy in order to maintain the unity of the Roman Catholic Church. To defend themselves against the crusaders, the 13th-century heretics took refuge in many of the region's castles whose spectacular ruins rear up on the rocky mountain summits.

Thus they came to be called 'Cathar Castles' and, by extension, all the surrounding countryside quickly became 'Cathar Country'. We would like to show you this region and its wonderful historical and cultural heritage - great architectural wealth in the form of cathedrals, abbeys, churches, towns, impressive castles and fortified villages.

We would also like to introduce you to another aspect of our heritage, without which France would not be France - our gastronomy, accompanied by regional wines, each with its distinctive qualities, that will delight your palate whether you are a connoisseur or not.

Our best known local speciality is the Blanquette de Limoux, the oldest sparkling wine in the world, the recipe of which inspired the creators of the much celebrated champagne.

I long to return!
We booked for one night only but after check-in decided to stay an extra night in order to enjoy the walled city a bit longer. Since they were expecting a large group from London we were told a second night would not be possible..our room would be occupied. Then, the owner said, well, the suite on the 5th floor is free. I will give you that for both nights at the same price. Our suite had a nice main bedroom, full bath with bidet and a side room with a single bed. There was a terrace off the single room where we took our breakfast and enjoyed a great view of the village. Outside our bedroom window was the walled city...which looked incredible under the full October moon at night! The bells from the neighboring mission added a lovley touch...even as they pealed at midnight. We were delighted and so thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Carcassonne has been my favorite place to remember on my honeymoon...and we toured the whole country!! Hotel du Pont-Vieux...I will be back!!

"We Loved Hotel du Pont-Vieux"
We have to disagree with the reviewer who said that the Hotel du Pont Vieux was depressing because of its decor. We usually are very aware of our surroundings, especially if they are oppressive, but while in this hotel last February we were completely enchanted. Maybe our room was different; it was a small room on the top floor which had a beautiful view of the ancient city. We intend to return this year because we had such a good time.

"incredible venue"
I stayed with my partner at this hotel for two nights, and we really liked it. On arrival in Carcassonne we firstly tried to find rooms within the walled city centre, but on a motorbike with camping gear we must have looked very scruffy to the guard at the gate as he wouldn't let us in. He waved us away telling us all the hotels were full. Discouraged, we headed towards a campsite out of town, 'Camping de la Cite', but found that the area we were offhandedly directed to in the campsite was soft ground next to a public footpath and a canal, which not only wouldn't have supported the weight of the motorbike but would have been insecure and full of mosquitoes. Also at 16 Euros it was expensive compared to the beautiful campsites we'd stayed at on the way down. Finally heading back into town we discovered Hotel du Pont-Vieux. On asking for a room the pleasant and very helpful owner found us a room on the second floor at a reduced price of 55 Euros (originally 75 Euros). It was large enough for four people, with two double beds, TV, phone, a little shuttered window over the narrow street, and a private bathroom with a WC, an enormous deep bath with hand-held shower and a bidet. It seemed to be an ancient house from which the original large rooms had been divided into little uneven ones, all different shapes and sizes. The furnishings weren't brand new or luxurious but the whole hotel had a pleasant ambience of originality which we both took to immediately. The Hotel is like a tall slender old house, with about 20 rooms and a tiny little terrace cut out of the roof with a wonderful view of the walled city, which was only a short walk away. You could come and go at any time of the day or night as access was through a keypad security system for which you were provided the code. The owner could not have been more helpful and spoke very good English. We were able to park the motorbike in his huge garage next to the reception area for one night, and then in his own small parking area on the street the foll ...into the Citadel and which were his personal favourite places to eat and drink. A relaxed self-service continental breakfast was available for 6.50 Euros pp which was well worth the money. If you would like to stay in a little hotel in Carcassonne I would definately recommend this hotel to you. A church nearby chimed the hours which we found to be quite charming. Although our room did suffer from some street noise, it didn't bother us much and there are rooms available that do not face the street if you feel this would disturb you.
