"Our favorite!!!!"
My family of five spent 16 nights in Europe in July and this was our favorite hotel. The rooms are old but ooze atmosphere. Outside the two rooms we stayed in was a parlor with 30 foot ceilings, two huge chandeliers and decorations of centuries past. The hotel we were told has been in operation since 1476. We were expecting ghosts to appear at night...but no luck. A cooked to order breakfast made it even better. And Rothenburg is a must-see. You won't find an internet connection or a large screen TV...but you will find a great taste of Europe!!! And the owner and staff are great!!!

"Undiscovered gem"
I am shocked there are not more recommendations in tour books and on web sites for Goldener Hirsch in the lovely village of Rothenburg ob der Tauber on the "Romantic Road." We got to Rothenburg in the late afternoon and booked a room by walking by and noticing what a beautiful property it was, and that it was a designated historic hotel. We asked how much for a night, and the man at the desk asked to show us the rooms first before quoting a price. He showed us two rooms that made our jaws drop because they were so large and furnished with antiques. The first one had windows trimmed with flower boxed filled with geraniums. It was perfect, and only 80 euros (about $100 when we were there)! This was by far the least expensive hotel during our 2-week stay and the nicest, even though we stayed in some terrific places. The buffet breakfast was excellent as well and served in a gorgeous room with expansive views of the valley below. The location was perfect -- just a two- or three-minute walk to the plaza in Rothenburg, right by all the shops and restaurants. They even had close-by parking for a small fee; I believe it was a few euros. The only reason I can think why there are not more reviews of this hotel is because some of the staff had limited English skills, which might make some Americans uncomfortable. But if you know the basics, such as how to retrieve your key, order coffee and tea at breakfast, and ask other simple questions, you will be made to feel right at home
