LOCATION
Hotel Mediterraneo is very close to Via Etnea, at the heart of Catania, one of the symbolic cities of Sicilian baroque. Cradle to theater and music, home town of the composer Vincenzo Bellini and the writer Giovanni Verga, it is a city to be lived both day and night, when the streets and squares surrounded by magnificent palaces, are thriving with life until dawn.
The hotel is situated in a highly strategic position and is the perfect point from which to discover this surprising city. Just a short distance from the Hotel, in fact, are some of the most artistically and culturally interesting places in Catania: the attractive Roman Amphitheater, the relaxing Villa Bellini gardens, a favorite with the Catanese people for strolling round, the magnificent Via dei Crociferi, overlooked by a series of magnificent baroque palaces, and Piazza Duomo, with the Chapel of St. Agatha where a valuable treasure is stored and carried in a procession every year during the celebrations in honor of the city's patron saint (3rd, 4th and 5th February).
The Benedictine Monastery is also an essential visit, nowadays home to the Faculty of Arts, the St. Julian Church, one of the most beautiful in Catania, and Ursino Castle, the only building to survive the earthquake in 1693.

This hotel was perfect for our one night stay in Catania before returning to Rome. It was very clean and modern and the staff was efficient and helpful. I would stay there again.

"Great Hotel"
We stayed at the Catania for only one night in May, 2005, but both the staff and the hotel left us wishing that we could stay longer.
We had some excellent advice and suggestions from Nadine at the front desk, and she was very quick with sending faxes to some hotels where we were needing to cancel our stay. We would have ended up making a number of big errors in our travels if it hadn't been for her. As well, we arrived long after the lounge closed, but she and the other staff got us a hot meal from their kitchen, and I still think of it as one of the best meals I had in Italy!
The room was large and very clean. It was on the first floor, overlooking a small courtyard, and it was exceptionally quiet.
We will go back to Catania, and we will stay at the Hotel Mediterraneo again.

"Clean, quiet, and great beds"
We stayed here on a one night stopover in Catania. Taxi from the train station was E10,00 and the taxi to the airport was E35,00. Our room was very nice, with the most comfortable beds as we've ever found anywhere. (My partner has back problems, so we're picky on that issue). It is a few blocks walk to the nice downtown shopping areas, though the immediate neighborhood is a bit shabby. Would certainly stay here again.
