Hotel Orfila Hotel Orfila Hotel Orfila

  Hotel Information

Gracious mansion amid high-end shops and galleries...

The 19th-century mansion, Hotel Orfila is just off the busy Paseo de la Castellana. Inside, the original carriage entrance leads into a marble-floored lobby, furnished with 19th-century furniture, and original, largely Spanish, paintings. Local and international business travelers dominate during the week. At weekends, leisure travelers are in the majority. Since the restaurant is a highlight of the hotel, food lovers are tempted to stay here.
LOCATION

Hotel Orfila is on a gallery-lined residential avenue in the embassy district, with the Prado Museum and Serrano Street shopping one km (a half-mile) away.
PROPERTY AMENITIES

* El Jardin de Orfila:
Breakfast buffet and à la carte lunch and dinner are served in this bright room, decorated in yellow and caramel. There are just 20 covers, all much in demand. The cuisine is Spanish Mediterranean and international. Suckling pig in pear cream is the specialty. In summer, guests can dine al fresco for a candlelit evening meal.

* Tea room:
Located at the far end and to the right of the lobby, this offers direct access to the courtyard garden. Snacks and drinks are served here all day but it is particularly popular for afternoon tea and pastries. It also hosts private lunches and dinners.

* The Bar:
Located to the right of the lobby, this intimate area is decorated with green fabric-covered banquettes, 19th-century chairs and bold English maroon and green-striped wallpaper. The cocktails served here from midday until late are renowned. The fruity red Agnes Sorel wine is the specialty of the house.

* The meeting room is located downstairs from the lobby, past an original painting of a pastoral scene by Luculo (an art restorer at the Prado). The eaves of the roof are glass, allowing natural light to enter from the courtyard garden. There is a capacity for up to 90 people, and audio-visual services are available. There is wireless Internet access. In spite of modern amenities, all furniture is 19th-century.
ROOM AMENITIES

* This hotel has 32 guestrooms, all of which have high-speed wireless Internet access and encircle the courtyard garden. Guests are welcomed with a complimentary bottle of Spanish wine with olive paté and biscuits. Sheets are linen. Some beds have automated latex mattresses. There are views of the garden or Orfila Street. Each room has a unique decor, but light tones, often yellow or green, are always predominant. With the exception of an inoffensive television stand and minibar, all furniture is original 19th-century.

* All have two comfortable chairs next to a coffee table; most have a fabric-covered sofa. Nineteenth-century paintings and prints, and framed silk scarves by Cartier and Loewe hang on the walls, (as well as 20th-century takes on paintings by Spanish masters Velasquez and Goya). The bathrooms have Etro designer toiletries, hydro-massage baths, flowers, and telephones.

"Perfect stay at Orfila"
We spent five perfect nights at Hotel Orfila in Madrid. Staff is very friendly, English-speaking, and wonderfully accomodating. Clientelle seemed mostly European, very upscale and sophisticated.This small, traditionally furnished hotel is beautifully restored and rooms are very plushly decorated, with large bathrooms and very comfortable living space. Good breakfast buffet and also several cafes nearby. Location is one of the best assets, near Plaza de Colon in a very upscale neighborhood. The subway stop is about three blocks away, or you can take a 15-minute walk down the stunning Paseo de Recoletos to the main street, Gran Via. Nearby neighborhoods in walking distance are Salamanca (Madrid's best neighborhood, lots of shopping and restaurants) and Chueca for late-night dining and barhopping. There are many cafes and bars within walking distance, as well as taxi stands three blocks away on Calle Genova. You definitely get more than you pay for at this great hotel!

"Fantastic Place"
I came here because work booked me in this hotel for two nights, and it exceeded my expectations. The rooms were very large, very clean, and the staff threw in details such as a complementary bottle of sherry on arrival, and an evening forcast of the next day's weather written on a small card next to your pillow when housekeeping make up the rooms. The hotel itself was situtated on a quiet street, perfect when you need to get things done. Highly recommended.

"Perfect for a romantic weekend!"
Fantastic small hotel! We stayed 5 nights for an anniversary weekend and it couldn't have been better!! Location is perfect, tucked down a quiet side street, so it really an oasis of peace in a noisy, hectic city where people don't even start going out to dinner before 9pm. Off a side street from Plaza Colon, at first our taxi driver had trouble finding it - always a good sign. Rooms are large, tastefully decorated and well appointed, particularly those at the back, and we found the staff extremely friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Madrid seems to be filling up with ultrahip design hotels which have no character and charge you a whack - the Orfila is not cheap, but great. There's a subway two blocks away, but as Madrid is really a city to walk and enjoy, we walked everywhere - the Prado and museums are only a 15-20 minute walk away. There is no shortage of excellent tapas bars and restaurants in the Chueca area which is no more than 10 minutes's walk. It's always a risk booking online, but in this case it was (for us anyhow) a risk well-rewarded. Can thoroughly recommend it for a romantic weekend in one of the most fun cities in Europe!
