"Imperial a winner"
How could anyone not enjoy the ambience of this beautiful old hotel/hostel? The public areas are as gorgeous as they were in '29. The massive double doors to each room assured a quiet night's sleep. Facilities are not en suite, but are constantly cleaned. Breakfast was generous, with endless baskets of good Czech crescent rolls. The staff spoke more English than I expected and were very helpful. I was there in November when there weren't many guests. My one caution would be against a high season stay when there might be too many demands on the WC's and showers. My traveling companions stayed at the Hilton--huge, impersonal, really boring. To feel like you're in old Prague, choose the Imperial.

"The Imperial Hotel - what a fab place!"
Contrary to a few of the other emails I have read, the appearance of the hotel was quite amazing - yes the exterior walls are marred by traffic pollution, but the architecture is amazing. I couldn't have asked for more polite and helpful staff, and they certainly aren't in the business of ripping people off. The rooms were clean, as were the toilets and showers. The Hotel Restaurant/Bar is really quite stunning - don't forget that the building dates from 1914 and was built as a luxury hotel. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to stay there again, in fact I am returning in Spring 2005. Come on people, stop complaining!

"Beautiful old hotel, fantastic value!"
Take no notice of the silly reviews a few people have posted here; I stayed at the Imperial with my boyfriend over Christmas in 2004 and found it to be a real bargain and a fantastic place to stay. The old-style ambience of this former luxury hotel (built in 1914) can't be beaten -- the mosaic interiors are absolutely stunning and the hotel's breakfast room/coffee shop is truly beautiful and the perfect place for an afternoon coffee or stylish pre-dinner drinks. The rooms are basic and don't include private showers (there are shared bathrooms down the hall as well as extra toilets and they're very clean and very nice), but on the upside the rooms are huge with plenty of space for all your stuff. We decorated ours for Christmas which made it much more pleasant. Compared to the tiny room we had in a Parisian hotel recently it was enormous! The only downside was that there didn't seem to be any option for a double bed so we had to push two singles together (I think this is common in Prague hotels though). The staff were helpful, the breakfast was great (heaps of cereal, cold meats, cheese, yoghurt, tea, orange juice etc. and you could eat as much as you liked) and best of all it was *extremely cheap* and very very centrally located -- close to everything you'd want to see in Prague. I totally recommend it!

"Fine for us"
We (in our 50's) have just come back from here. Hoardes of teenage groups cavorting around passageways + stairs, but once in our room, couldn't hear them. Good idea to take earplugs though, as the trams outside are noisy. Breakfast tea was grey and horrible, but coffee was OK. Food was fine, and we packed breakfast rolls with ham and cheese to keep for lunch -very handy. The beds must be original 30's. They were rock hard, but we got tired enough to hardly notice it. Generally the hotel and staff were perfect - no problems. And there's a lift!
