Inter-Hotel Espace Citeprovides all the comforts of a modern hotel, the town of Carcassonne, in the Aude, boasts a magnificent reminder of its past, the medieval citadel. Only 220 yds away from the main entrance to this world famous monument of the Middle Ages.

LOCATION

Inter-Hotel Espace Cite is located near the centre of this charming French town of Carcassonne. Espace Cite Hotel allows guests to explore the region and discover its famous sites.

Eventually the fortified part of Carcassonne fell into disrepair in such an extent that the French government seriously considered that it should be demolished. A decree to that effect was made official in 1849 but it caused an uproar. Historian Jean-Pierre Cros-Mayrevieille and writer Prosper Mérimée lead a campaign to preserve the fortress as historical monument. Later in the year an architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc was commissioned to renovate the place.

Fortifications consists of a double ring of ramparts and 53 towers. The fortress was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997. The fortified city of Carcassonne serves as inspiration for the German board game Carcassonne by Hans im Glück.

The newer part (Ville Basse) of the city on the other side of the Aude river manufactures shoes, rubber and textiles. It is also center of a major AOC wine-growing region. Major part of the income, however, comes from the tourism connected to the fortifications (Cité) and boat cruising on the Canal du Midi. Carcassonne receives about 3 million visitors annually.

The bridge, Pont Marengo, crosses the Canal du Midi and provides access to the railway station. Lac de la Cavayère has been created as a recreational lake and is about 5 minutes from the City.

just come back from long weekend Hotel is in great location small rooms but very comfortable great breakfast very good value for money just 300yds from le cite and just across the river to main town about 10mins walk we will return to area and would recommend this Hotel ask for room with view of le cite.

"Place to Stay in Carcassonne"
We stayed at the Espace Cite in February the really cold week when there was snow all over France! We booked through the net for 2 nights, then went back there again for one night before we flew home. It was spotlessly clean, tidy and well organised - with friendly staff. The price was 48 euros for a double room, and breakfast was extra. If you go ask for a room with a view of the old city, and you'll see it from your room. Then it's either a 2 minute walk up to the gates of the old city, or a ten minute (downhill) walk through lovely old lamplit streets into the new town - both with a fabulous view of the Cite. Breakfast is excellent - in a light pleasant dining room with a terrace that I expect is open in summer, again overlooking the Cite walls. There's carparking, TV, heating (air con in summer) - what more can you ask for?
