"Quite a nice spot"
My girlfriend and I stayed at the Intercontinental for two nights at the beginning of October, 2005. Overall, it's a nice place. The staff are friendly, and the building and grounds are well-maintained. They are undergoing renovations, however, and I believe they could do a better job of keeping the area under-construction looking a little more appealing.
The pool area is great. The poolside restaurant, which I think is called "El Fogon de Piedra" is quite nice. Their specialty is a variety of meats and vegetables which you cook yourself on a heated stone, hence the name of the restaurant. There's also a good steakhouse right across the road, called "Hatoviejo". It's literally right across the road so you don't even need a taxi, although if you're with Colombians they might drive there anyway, since they never seem to walk.
One minor complaint: one time they cleaned our room and didn't leave any bathtowels. But after calling housekeeping they arrived within about 20 minutes with more towels. All in all a very nice place.
A note about security: it's in the Poblado section of Medellin, which is the safest part. I felt totally safe while I was there.
