"A Real 5-Star Hotel"
I have lived 7 years in Asia and often stayed at this hotel when in Beijing. The rooms are nice and couldn't be any cleaner. Service is 5 star all the way.
The Kempi Deli makes great sandwiches and fresh juice. There is also a brewry on the premises which makes its own beer and offers traditional German fare.
The adjacent department store is very good place to buy souvenirs or Chinese art.
The area itself is nice, just by the 3rd ring road. You can walk to the embassy district and to SanLi Tun Street where there are many pubs and cafes. The gym is also very well equipped.
Highly recommended.
P.S. And, yes, there is a gift shop. It is located in the corridor between the hotel lobby and the department store. They carry a good choice of foreign newspapers.

"Excellent Choice in Beijing"
I cannot speak highly enough of the Kempinski Beijing Lufthansa hotel. Our visit to Beijing was part business and part leisure, and the hotel handled both requirements very well. The rooms are of a high standard as you would expect in a 5 star hotel, but the true highlight is the service. English speaking staff were extremely helpful, courteous and caring. The hotel tour desk also expertly organised a tour of the Great Wall for us, plus gave us tips on how best to negotiate some of the other Beijing sights on our own.
In the same complex is a department store, restaurants (all types of cuisines catered for), business centre and downstairs is an excellent supermarket in which western travellers can find their comfort foods from home. The breakfast buffet each day is terrific, with both asian and western breakfast staples.
In a city with a culture so different from our own, the Kempinski Beijing Lufthansa hotel made us feel completely welcome and at home.

"A pleasurable return"
I stayed at the Kempinski on my previous trip in June and had been very impressed then with the quiet efficient service. It's not like the lip service that you get in so much of the service industry these days. They may not be gushing or sycophantic, they just deliver on all levels. Nothing is too much trouble and you never have to ask twice for anything. The thing I really liked was the ability that the better hotels have to be able to clean your room when it suited you and not when they felt like it.
The location is good and the only downside is the cost of eating and drinking in the hotel. This seems to apply to all the quality hotels in China and is completely out of proportion to the economy.
There's hundreds of good restaurants in Beijing, my advice is to use them whilst you stay at the Kempinski.
