"Great Hotel... as ever!"
Just returned from what is probably our tenth visit to La Cala! The setting is simply stunning and I can't think of many better hotel views than those from the terraces and balconies at La Cala... right out over the Mijas hills. And the night-time floodlit view of the pool area that's in all the brochures looks even better in reality! Right, for those of you that haven't been before... It's about a 6-8 minute winding drive up into the hills from the turnoff of the N340/A7 at La Cala de Mijas (perhaps a bit less if you adopt rally-driver mentality and have anything over a 1.2 Litre Vauxhall Corsa hire car!) Tourist-wise, there's nothing else on this road really (apart from the rather basic looking Restaurant El Jinete just outside the La Cala complex entrance... but which actually is very nice and great for an evening meal!) So you will need a hire car to go out and about - and also for meals - unless you want to eat in the hotel every night. Anyway, back to the hotel. They've upgraded the rooms a bit since we were there last year. A new lick of paint, pictures, armchair, curtains etc. Very comfortable... Bathrooms are still gorgeous and the balconies and/or terraces are fantastic. There’s a new Spa complex currently being built (to be opened at the end of 2005) and they’ve just re-done all the changing rooms in the golf club house. It also looks like a new gym is going in there too. Everywhere is clean, spotless and has good-quality furnishings. Breakfasts are great and they’re now offering a new “Menu del dia” three-course dinner option in the main hotel restaurant (25 Euros per person I think?) and a lunch option in the clubhouse (12 Euros I think)… perhaps to counteract previous grumblings that evening meals were pricey in the hotel? Around the pool area it’s still fairly quiet and relaxing during the day - probably in part because a lot of guests are golfing for 4-5 hours during that period. The pool bar is quite expensive (though only on a par with any other 5-star resort.) Instead, many people seem to stock up on water/soft drinks/beers from the SuperSol supermarket down in La Cala de Mijas and simply clear out their minibars and convert them to mini fridges! The only real possible downsides I would consider for people are: 1. The short-ish drive from the “resort” down to the main road for people who want to go out at night to eat/drink. 2. Being quietish, it’s possibly not the best family resort (ie for younger children to meet and play with other younger children!)… though they do seem to have started a small kids club this summer. I guess it's just the luck of the draw as to who else is staying there (and what nationality) when you're visiting. 3. As I believe the hotel was originally conceived/designed as a time-share development, some of the rooms do have (locked) interconnecting doors. On one occasion in the past we did have a screaming baby from hell next door and a serial furniture mover on the marble floor upstairs! However, this time we had no noise at all from adjoining rooms…so perhaps they’ve done something to help the soundproofing as they’ve modernised the rooms! Not much more to add really. Just go there, you’ll love it! Oh yes, and the golf courses are great too!
