The site is superb: a white beach of 500 m, green emerald sea of the coral lagoon of Ifaty, one of the vastest lagoons in the world, within a framework of 21 hectares of “thorny forest”. You are in a region of the “Vezo”; fishermen by tradition, they boldly defy the sea on board their small sailing dugouts known as “lakana”.
Tulear, crossed by the Tropic of Capricorn, is the capital and the port of the Great South of Madagascar. From Antananarivo, Capital of Madagascar, you can join Tuléar by plane or by the RN N°7, 925 km completely tarred, the road of the Great South, which offers superb and varied spectacles, while passing by the mountains of Fianarantsoa, and the National Park of Isalo, Ranohira.
Tulear looks like peaceful provincial town: get a ride downtown on rickshaw called a “pousse-pousse”, typical to Tuléar, but it is advised to agree on the price of the ride before geting in.
To see: The Sea Museum, near the University of the Sea (IHSM), on the road to the port, where you can admire a splendid specimen of “Cœlacantus”. This prehistoric fish, reported missing nearly 150 million years ago, was recently fished by chance of Tulear’s deep.
The big market “Bazaar Be”: assured colors and folklore. Arboretum: a botanical garden with more than 900 species of endemic “Thorny Forest” plants. Guests also must see show room of the famous carpets of Ampanihy, the Ethnographic Museum and the local handicrafts and shells market.
The restaurant proposes a cuisine of “meat, vegetables and seafood” of a sovereign but refined simplicity: lobsters, shellfish, seafood, fish, zebu meat. Even the pizza lovers will not be disappointed. Sometimes, your dinner will be accompanied by dancing and Vezo songs.
