Hotel Information
Le Prieure Hotel, a charming manor house dating from the 12th and 16th centuries...

Le Prieure Hotel, a charming manor house dating from the 12th and 16th centuries, looks out over the River Loire and its islands. In the distance is King René's 15th century fairy tale castle dominating this pastoral scene and the medieval town of Saumur.

Gleaming white, Le Prieuré has a stately presence with its vast chimneys and imposing towers as it stands proudly within its 62-acre wooded park that extends down to the river. The interiors have a spacious grandeur with a wonderful spiral staircase, great carved fireplaces, canopied beds and antique furniture.

The area is famous for its mushrooms that come from the nearby Tufa caves; salmon, perch and eel from the river; and excellent local wines: Saumur, Anjou, Layon and Champigny, a delightful méthode champenoise. This is the place to stay for anyone on a gastronomic Tour de France.

"Blissful stop at Le Prieure"
We were travelling through France in April and this was a perfect place to stay overnight, wonderfully quiet and peaceful. A stay of several days would be just as justified. Don't be scared off by high prices in the Chateau itself. We stayed in one of the cottages in the park/gardens which was beautifully equipped with the added bonus of our own deck area to sit and relax and much less pricey. Not quite the character of staying in the main house but you'll get all of that when you go for dinner anyway. When booking your table in the dining room, request one by the window to take advantage of the most sensational views over the Loire. Wines expensive for France, food very good. We were so well looked after without being overwhelmed and really enjoyed ourselves. A final tip, we opted for continental breakfast in the room which was ample (and included proper fresh orange juice) and was 50 per cent cheaper than buffet breakfast in the dining room. Lovely.

"Enjoyable and relaxin"
We had an excellent visit to the Prieure. We also stayed in the casual yet comfortable cottage area. Perfect for travelling with a child. Able to stay use the ample recreational facilities and enjoy the ambiance of the inn. Close to lots of activities in Saumer.

"Beautiful location, beautiful room, lovely food and service"
This place is spectacular in beauty and service. We loved our room (#14) in the Chateau was huge and very nicely appointed. Mini bar in the room fully stocked. The bathroom was amazing and quite comfortable with big thick robes, nice towels and excellent supply of toiletries. It even had a towel warmer which made for a very nice bath after a horribly long drive from Paris. Take note that this place is very hard to find and we got extremely lost (like almost 3 hours). I don't know how to best tell you to get to the hotel but from the town of Samour, you go towards Chenehutte/Canault on a long winding road and hopefully see the sporadic signs along the way for Le Prieure (they are not obvious) and you will find your way. We opted for a room in the actual Chateau (it was worth the splurge) with the half board option that included breakfast in our room (which was beautiful and quite good) we just pushed our little table to the large double windows in our room overlooking the Loire River and enjoyed the comfort of our room in our PJs instead of going to the restaurant which had the exact same view. The dinner was elegant and very good. The restaurant is nice and the food was some of the best we had in France however, the service for dinner was more than a bit rude - our waiter was very obvious about being not too pleased to serve Americans (we are mother and adult daughter traveling together who try to be very quiet, polite and not the loud rude 'ugly americans' that so many french seem to think ALL of us are) but that did not seem to matter much to the snooty waiter. It seemed that he felt it was very beneath him to have to serve us. Fortunately, the food and the other employees were very nice including the other younger waiter who brought our breakfast each morning and the front desk staff who were nice, english speaking and very helpful. We slept very well in the extremely comfortable beds (turn down service was nice)and the overall experience was superb. We stayed two nights and since it was off season, I'm pretty sure we were the only guests (there MAY have been one other room occupied) When we checked out, we ordered a picnic basket to take along with us on our tour of the Loire and Chateaus which was very helpful (if a bit expensive). I'd love to stay here again when the Loire is a bit more green, since we came in March, it was very very cold and everything on the Loire was brown and dead but still beautiful.
