"great overnight hotel"
I stayed 2 nights at the Lero Hotel for a quick business trip. Rooms are fairly standard but clean and functional. Location is great, only about 10-15 minutes from the old town. The best beach in town is just accross the street at the Hotel Bellevue. The Lero Hotel is a bargain compared to the rest of the Dubrovnik hotels.

"a well-maintained example of how to suvive its being overused by groups"
Hotel Lero is an example of a hotel that is almost overflowing with group tours of elderly German or French travellers -- hundreds of old people. And yet it maintains a good standard of care for the individual traveller: the rooms are large and modern (and maintained very well despite their being used so excessively by groups), the breakfast is very ample, and the front desk seem to care -- despite their being inundated incessantly with old fearful group tour people asking questions. The hotel is on a busy street -- and asking for a room at the back makes sense. It's about a twenty-minute walk to the old town along a congested street. But Hotel Lero seems to be the only reasonably priced hotel anywhere near the old city; a double room is 92 euros. (There's now a new Sheraton near the Pile Gate, plus a new hotel in the old town near the cathedral. However, both establishments look pretty expensive.) And if you want a beach holiday, however, Hotel Lero is not for you! Hotel Lero, by the way, has a desk in the lobby manned by a very charming older woman who can arrange excursions by bus (e.g., to Montenegro, Mostar, coastal wineries, etc.); she's very efficient.

I spent a week at Hotel Lero from 21st July 05.The location was perfect,the food good and the staff extrmely friendly especially tourist reception.It is an ideal base to tour Dubrovnk and surrounding areas with a small beech across the road at hotel Belview.Very clean with reasonably good food.Will stay again if ever in Dubrovnik. Word of warning about Anunni restaurant in old town "overpriced, poor quality and no response to complaints" avoid at allcosts.
