"A good 4* hotel"
We stayed here for 5 nights and found the hotel quite good. The staff was always friendly and willing to help. The room was average size with all the equipment expected from a 4* hotel. Nothing special, but very neat and comfortable. Buffet breakfast is good. I especially appreciated a wide selection of good cheese. There's a genuine Japanese restaurant, and we found it very good, if you're into this type of food. The hotel is ideally situated in the city center. Whether you're on business, or on vacation, you'll find everything within easy reach (the only exception being Scheveningen beach), including both railway stations. If your room faces the city center, you're treated to some impressive architecture both in daytime and at night. About the only gripe we had is that the hotel provided little extras - no swimming pool or sauna, no early breakfast if you have to get up and leave before the buffet opens, and such. We payed 140/day, and I think it's acceptable.

"Peals of laughter at the Mercure"
I stayed at the Mercure for two nights in early September. I was with a group of colleagues and we were visiting the Hague on a business trip. The member of staff at the front desk inadvertently gave two of us the same room. I phoned the front desk and asked them whether the double-booking was some sort of weird Dutch custom. I was greeted by peals of laughter and was swiftly allocated another room. Given the propensity of many European hotels to staff their front desks with the Continental equivalent of the Stepford wives, it was refreshing to encounter someone with a well developed sense of humour. This is a four star hotel which delivers on all four of its stars. Both the room and the bed were comfortable. The breakfast buffet is excellent and it offers a wide range of both cooked and cold foods. And the Mercure is literally five minutes walk away from the centre of the Hague and its eclectic selection of pleasant shopping streets. Having sampled excellent Indonesian cuisine in the Hague twenty years ago, I visited the Garoeda restaurant with my colleagues in an attempt to repeat the experience. I was a little suspicious when they produced thirty-two different dishes in the space of ten minutes. On tasting the different dishes, the mystery was quickly solved. The vast majority of them had been re-heated. If, like me, you are a fiend for fresh ingredients and freshly cooked food, this is not the restaurant for you. But there is a high calibre restaurant called 'floow' at Plein 22, the imposing square in which many of the Government buildings are situated. We sat out of doors on a balmy evening and consumed some superb Dutch dishes cooked in the 'nouvelle' style. The accompanying beer and wine also met with our approval. And the staff - from the manager to the charming girl who served us - radiated a genuine warmth of character which served to enhance the dining experience. Although the Hague is a little off the beaten track, it is well worth a visit !
