"Nice place, delicious breakfast"
We stayed in the Mercure Salzburg in January 2004 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I have to say, though, that we booked the hotel via totalstay for just 65 Euro per night including the hot buffet breakfast. Normally, the rooms cost about double as much. The staff at the reception were generally helpful and friendly. The rooms were about right for a four-star standard, bright and comfortable, with a mini-bar which proved practical for storing small amounts of food and drink. The breakfast in the morning was absolutely fabulous with prosecco, freshly pressed orange juice, tasty fried egg and bacon as well as a large selection of other (partly local) foods. If you like cheese, try the cheese platter ( Käseplatte ) which is available via the room service and costs 7 Euro. The cheese, bread and butter is enough for two people and tastes delicious. Also, it is advisable to bring a little kettle, if you would like to make your own teas and coffees. The tap water in the salzburg region is so good (no chlorine), that you can drink it without any reservations. One slight disadvantage was the heat, which seemed to build up over night and could not be controlled for individual rooms. However, at the end of the day, overheated rooms are probably less of a problem in January than cold ones, so we just left the window open over night.
