An alternative to walking the bewildering streets of Venice is to cruise the waterways onboard the motorboat buses known as vaporetti. These are the less romantic but also less expensive substitutes for the famous gondolas.

Charming friendly staff and great location
We loved the Hotel Messner. We originally booked it because of the value and proximity to San Marco (only 1 vaporetto stop away) but really enjoyed our stay there. The room was fine with an en suite bath and a view of the garden. The breakfast was hearty and the one dinner we had in the restaurant was great - best gnocchi and sage I've had. The real plus was the staff - the manager played concierge for us and gave great tips. My husband is an early riser and was up each day before us and before breakfast so the staff would make him cappucino and seat him in the garden. They even took photos of the hotel cat (orange tabby) sitting in his lap. My husband would also tire of shopping and go back to the garden to chill with a glass of wine before changing for dinner. The Dorsoduro neighborhood is very nice and not at all crowded with great shops and cafes. It is a very central location within an easy walk/vaporetto stop or bridge crossing to anywhere in Venice. All in all it was a great location and experience at an affordable price - in the world's oldest tourist city - can you ask for more?
