"This is a wonderful and rare hotel!"
We adore The Meurice! Lovely staff and an absolutely beautiful hotel. It is like stepping back into a more elegant and gentle age. The hotel is beautifully furnished with antiques, the food is excellent, fresh squeezed orange juice and wonderful croissants and a good restaurant. We cannot understand why it has only been awarded 3 stars, when we find it much better than many of the 4 star hotels we have stayed at in France. It is one of the world's best kept secrets. This hotel is a rare treasure. Only one complaint, the coffee does not come up to good french standards - but perhaps they are catering to the British market in that area! Despite that, we would never stay anywhere else and would even go to Calais just for the experience of staying there.

"An excellent choice"
We stayed at the Hotel Meurice in cold, wet and windy November, but the ambience in the Hotel Meurice more than made up for the weather. It was probably the most friendly hotel we have stayed in for many years. Right in the centre of Calais, but just off the beaten track, means it is very conveniently located but also nice and quiet. Without exception, the staff were lovely and extremely efficient; the standard of rooms, comfort, cleanliness etc, was very high indeed; and the breakfasts were absolutely superb - a wonderful choice providing the best breakfasts we've eaten in any hotel. A *** hotel with a ***** flavour.

"Loved it!"
The Hotel Meurice is a gem and I don't know why I'm writing this really because I don't want everybody to know about it!!!
If you want a modern, minimilastic hotel - don't stay here! The Hotel Meurice is packed full of antiques and old world charm - and the service is reminiscent of hotels long forgotten - no computer generated impersonal bills but beautifully hand written old fashioned bills/receipts. Keys not cards for your room - fab - and nothing too much trouble!
If you don't like a few aged scratches - don't stay here! If you do like bed linen and beds to die for....stay! If you don't like wood and gilt - don't stay - if you like character and charm do!!! Oh and not forgetting Zeus, the lovely dog who keeps one eye open just to see who's popping in and out!!!
The hotel is nothing to look at from the outside but step through the doors and you would never believe you were in a busy industrial port town in Northern France!!!
And as for the restaurant....many people tell me they don't get good food in France. The food my husband and I enjoyed in this restaurant was second to none. It looked amazing, tasted as amazing as it looked and was served in excellent fashion. And the wine - again excellent - with some really good reccommendations by the Maitre'd (spelling!).
We only stayed one night at the Meurice on our way home but will be starting and finishing our tour of Europe there next year! |

"Classy hotel"
The room was bigger and far more stylish than the one we had at the George V, very clean and comfortable with TV and coffee-making facilities. We paid €79 for a double en-suite through a website linked to Trip Advisor. The hotel is really well situated for the locally recommended restaurants (Rough Guide), although for sheer value, class, taste and presentation, go for the "Petit George" menu at the George V virtually next door to the Meurice (3 courses €17, so good we had to settle for just 2 at €14.50, house wine about €16). The breakfast the following morning at the Meurice, by contratst, was a big disappointment. At €12 per person, all the guests were crammed into the conservatory-style annex. As it was a buffet breakfast, it made negotiating the tables with food very difficult and at one point impossible. Coffee machine (instead of served at the table) was naff and kept running out of water. The croissants and pains au chocolat were stale (by days!) Really not worth the money. The reception/lobby area is splendid, with an impressive staircase up to the more expensive rooms. Recently re-carpeted, but huge rolls of new carpet blocked the corridor we had to negotiate. Would stay there again, but only for the room. Recommend you book a garage space (€8 per night) because parking outside the hotel, though plentiful, was all gone by 4 p.m. Garage is under hotel and accessed easily by a lift to the lobby |
