"Very modern"

"Great Service at Le Pharoh"
Picked this hotel as a) it had reasonable reviews here and b) it was included in a package sold by Eurostar. When we stayed in early August (me, wife two teenage daughters) the hotel was still being shaken down. Most of the issues mentioned in earlier reviews had been sorted. Room A/C was fine and being monitored by engineers, although the corridors were still v. hot. The hotel decor is simple and modern. The pool not particularly large but we spent some pleasant time there. Staff were exceptional and completely dispel any myth about poor service from the French. They were very helpful, spoke good English and tolerated our pathetic attempts at their language with good humour. Front desk staff were helpful. Bar staff very pleasant and we had no problems with getting served. The hotel restaurant has a small lunch/diner menu but is very good and the breakfast buffet was great. Waiting staff excellent. It's a new hotel with a new, young team and they are trying hard and succeeding. That said the hotel is only a short walking distance to to the old Port with a wide variety of restaurants. There are also some hidden gems not too far away. For the full Bouillbase experience you must go to Chez FonFon in the tiny little fishing inlet of Vallon des Auffes about 25 mins walk away. It's not cheap but is beautiful location and a lovely experience. There is also a frenetic Pizza restaurant just across from FonFonwhich we visited one night. Very, very busy and noisy and service was a litle haphazard but the food was good value. The hotel is on the edge of the Old Port at the top of a hill and the local area isn't up to much. That said there is tiny little bar just across the street run by a very pleasant couple and full of locals. Don't go to the bar on the corner just up from there as this is really rough. As with most of Marseille there is a lot of litter around which is a great shame because the city could be so much cleaner. We're glad we went there but probably wouldn't return. Walking down the hill in the other direction away from the city brings you quickly to a small beachfront with a few bars and restaurants some of which are worth eating at. The local bus service is very good and provides a cheap and efficient way of exploring further afield. Nearby Casis is a 'must see'. It's picture pretty and has lots of restaurants - some very 'touristy' but others worth a visit. You can get there by train from the main station although we ended up taking a taxi for 50 Euros.
