"Good base in Catania"
We stayed here for 10 days in October 2005. The hotel is situated outside of Catania in a quiet area, only one other hotel nearby and an excellent trattoria( del Sole). The hotel overlooks a lovely sandy beach- it has its own private section. The hotel is also close to Fontanarossa airport flightpath - but there did not appear to be any late evening or nightflights so we were not disturbed.
The hotel is "bow" shaped with the upper floor having a sea view and the lower floor a view of the hotel gardens. There are rooms at the rear which overlook a parking area and a public "park", which is mainly woods. In the park there is a jogging track- lit at night- and a large childrens playground. Across the park - about 10 mins- is a large hypermarket.
The bedroom was furnished to good standard and the bed was very comfy, and spotlessly clean, the TV had 2 English channels and 2 Sky movie channels plus local channels. The bathroom was well fitted but a bit cramped for two. The breakfast buffet provided a good selection of cereals, yogurts, fruits cooked meats and cheese. The only hot food was bacon and scrambled egg, but there was a mouthwatering array of cakes and breakfast bakes.
In the evening we ate the table d'hote menu which was of a high standard(30 euros).Overall we enjoyed our stay and would definitely return. Despite Sicily's reputation as a crime area we experienced no problems whatsoever and found the Catanian people very helpful and genuine. There is a shuttle bus from the hotel to the Cathedral 4 times a day- Mon to Fri- but it only operates on Sat mornings and not at all on Sundays. If you are planning to use the hotel as a base to explore Taormina or Siracusa a car would be a bonus, although the intercity bus service is excellent - apart from weekends. This hotel provides a quiet oasis away from the frenetic pace of life in Catania.
