"Great value for money, good location"
Just returned from 1 week in Bangkok staying at the Novotel Lotus. Found it to be execellent value for money.
The rooms were clean and spacious. Decor is a bit dated, but we didn't travel all that way to spend our time in the hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. All speak English quite well (just not over the phone!).
Buffet breakfast was very good. Large selection of pastries, meats, fruits and anything else you could want. Surprisingly, the dinner buffet was amazing. We ate there on our last night as we were too tired to go elsewhere.
Location of hotel was good. Less than 5 minute walk away from Phrom Pong skytrain station. There is a large 24hr supermarket about 2 minutes away, as well as your usual 7-11, Subway, pubs/bars etc. There is a great restaurant called the Vientiane which is only 1 train ride away (get off at Thong Lor station). Food is great, but worth checking out as it's quite different to what one might expect. If you're after a spot of shopping, the Emporium (large high-end shopping centre) is 5 minutes walk away from the hotel, but other than that, there is not much choice. You will need to jump on the BTS and head towards Nana or Siam.

"Great base for your bangkok stay"
We stayed at the Novotel Lotus for 3 nights as part of a package deal with Cathay. I was a little nervous after reading some of the reviews here but was so impressed with our stay (as was my boyfriend) that we decided we'd probably stay there again on future trips to bangkok.
First impressions: the lobby was lovely- very cool & relaxing (welcome after the heat and noise of bangkok streets) with a small lobby bar. All the staff were friendly, smiling and helpful.
Rooms/bathrooms- we stayed on the 28th floor as did the two friends we were travelling with. Our rooms had a view over the city skyline and were decent size with a comfortable king size bed, robes, slippers, all necessary toiletries and a good size safe. Very important to us as we travel with a laptop.
Restaurants- we only tried Coco's for breakfast as it's included in the room rate and it was great. Thai noodle soups, curries, omelettes or eggs freshly prepared, bacon, pastries, fruit, salads, yoghurt, cereals, cold meats, cheeses, breads and juices. Was not a question of quantity rather than quality either as everything tasted good.
Pool etc- pool was fairly small and is adjacent to Coco's on the 9th floor (so you get a view over the city as well). Water was lovely and warm at most times of the day though and you could order drinks as well. From stairs near the entrance to the pool you could go to the gym & hair salon. The gym was small but with all the equipment you would need to get a decent workout.
Area- as many reviews have mentioned, the skytrain station is a 2min walk and is very fast & convenient. We used this only once however as the heat of the day combined with the conversion of 27 baht to 1 AUD meant that we caught taxis to most places. Bangkok is a very big city. So the fact that this area is not near Siam Square is not a big deal at all. It should cost you 60 baht to get to the following places from the Novotel (this is the rate if the taxi driver switches on the meter): Pratunam (market & shopping area), MBK (big retail complex with market stalls inside also), Patpong (red light zone). Most taxi drivers will not switch on the meter automatically unless the hotel calls them for you and insists on it. Make sure they do however as they will try and double or triple the real cost of the ride otherwise. Tuk tuks are the same though you may be able to get them cheaper as they have no aircon etc.
The street the Novotel is on has a fair few dodgy bars and 'teen massage' places as well as some legitimate massage places. We went to one of the first as you walk down the st away from Sukhumvit rd. It was big, with a hair salon on the first floor, nail & beauty on the second floor and massage on the 3rd & 4th floors. 250 baht got us a 1hr thai massage which was excellent. the hotel has in room massage also but is much more expensive.

"A special arrival!"
Being our honeymoon, I mentioned this on the booking form, not expecting anything except perhaps (just maybe!) we'd get a room upgrade or something. Well, if you don't ask, you don't get.
I should have suspected something was up when senior female staff member personally escorted us to our room. There, on the bed, was a HUGE floral display made of lotus petals in the shape of a heart! The attention to detail was fantastic and I can't thank them enough.
The pool was nice, but it had very rough stone edges causing cuts to my knees (next time, use the ladder). The restaurant overlooking the pool was quite pleasant but nothing special.
Location is fairly good, being close to a skytrain station and a shopping mall.

"Value for Money"
We have stopped at this hotel many times over the last 10 years or so - it remains one of our favorites, and should definitely be considered if you are budget-conscious. For the price, it is definitely a good deal.
Location is good, just off Sukhumvit and a 2min walk to the skytrain station which will take you to all the main shopping areas and also down to the river - a good way to get around Bangkok and avoid the always-bad traffic. One caveat-the sidestreet (soi33) has a lot of bars that "cater for gentlemen: - not seedy, but maybe not the best for families with small kids.
Rooms are fine, large and clean. Service levels are very good, they seem to have made an effort in the last year to make even better (it was already good....) Never eaten at the hotel at night (too many good restaurants in Bangkok), but the buffet breakfast is very good.
Overall a good mid-range hotel.

"Great hotel in a good location"
I had not stayed at this hotel before preferring the Novatel in Siam Square but I got a special rate so I tried if for a week. I loved it!! The location is not in the center of many things but it has its own unique character and activities. Also, it is a 5 minute walk to the BTS and about 4 stops to Siam Square. The breakfast was more like brunch with different items every day. It is the best breakfast buffet I have encounterd in Bangkok. The pool is not as big as other hotel being only about 35 feet long but its ok. There are great legitimate massage places down the street and the Emporium shopping center a short walk away for upscale shopping. The staff was more than great and the rooms and everthing fine. I cannot say anything bad or less than good about the hotel or its location. I am going to make this my hotel of choice on my frequent trips to Bangkok.

"Very pleasant stay"
The hotel was very nice and good value for money. When we arrived our room was not ready and we had to wait quite a while for it to be cleaned, however, we were given welcome drinks and made ourselves comfortable in the bar.
The room itself was good and had everything we needed, the staff were very helpful and the breakfast provided was good. The hotel has a great little cafe on the ground floor that had great little cakes, the food in the hotel lobby was ok but not excellent. The location is not great if you want to tour around Bangkok itself as it is quite far from everything however, it is just two minutes from a sky-train so getting to Siam Square etc is easy, taxi's are almost impossible in rush hour. The hotel is also two minutes from the Emporium shopping centre which has many designer stores.
