"Wonderful start to our Andalusian holiday"
Stayed at this wonderful Parador in September 2004. The hotel is set high up on a wooded hill overlooking the town of Malaga with fabulous views. Our room (No 111) was very quiet and comfortable with lovely views from the private balcony of the town and the bay/port. The room was light and airy and had a TV, trouser press, mini-bar and a lovely well equipped, marble bathroom. The hotel had a roof-top pool with towels provided. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel had a lovely restaurant with some tables, al fresco, on a terrace, again with spectacular views of the town and port. The menu for dinner was good and the service excellent. The breakfast room was light and airy with a great selection of food to cater for all tastes. Plenty of private parking.

"A relaxing sophisticated break"
This was my second visit to the city of Malaga and my first stay overnight here. I don't think we could have picked a better place to stay. The service was excellent, even with large parties of Spaniards descending on the bar for afternoon coffees! The food was as good a standard as many Michelin starred restaurants (and, hence was good value for money) using local produce and complimented by a good list of Spanish wines (again not cheap but reasonably priced for the types and vintages on offer). I can thoroughly recommend the seven course taster menu I had at 50 Euros, which was stunning. I was mildly disappointed that the view from my lower floor room was slightly blocked by trees. However, due to the cooler temperatures in the evening at this time of year I didn't spend any time on the balcony preferring to visit the bar and sit looking at the view from the warmth of the longe area. The room itself was well appointed with a seating area and a large marble bathroom. Malaga itself is a city of contrasts with the old city full of character, charm, good shops and bars and with the new city full of high rise apartments and concrete! The people are as sophisticated as you would expect from a cosmopolitan, meditteranean city. I would recommend visits to the Picasso Museum, the cathedral, Cafe Central (the tapas were very good for lunch but sit inside with the locals for more atmosphere and less buskers!), the shops and, of course, the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro castle. If you fancy some light relief from all the culture just hop on the suburban train and visit Torremolinos just down the coast. Tacky as hell but certainly different!

"Peaceful City Retreat"
- Having read previous reviews I had high expectations of Parador Gibralfaro - I'm glad to say my expectations were more than met. If you are looking for a city break hotel with the feeling of being in the city then this hotel is not for you. The hotel's location at the top of a hill overlooking Malaga town provides a brilliant view but also makes you feel very detached from the town itself. You are so close yet so far therefore a taxi ride is required (especially in evenings). I would love to come back to Parador Gibralfaro in the future as a perfect start to a self-drive holiday to Andalucia. I would also look to staying in sister 'Parador' hotels during my journey.

"An absolutely superb hotel"
We arrived at this hotel around lunchtime and planned to just leave our bags and head into the city, but the view from our balcony was so stunning that we just stayed there all afternoon with an excellent room service lunch, and a bottle of chilled fino, marvelling at what we could see. As you would expect from a Parador, things are of a uniformly high standard here - the location is the cherry on the cake. As others have said, the breakfasts (not often a strong point in Spanish hotels) are excellent and you should also eat dinner here at least once during your stay. It's especially useful to have such great food available on a Sunday evening, a time when most good restaurants in Spain are closed. We couldn't have been made more welcome (we had an electrical problem in the room which was sorted out within ten minutes of calling reception) and it's impossible to think of returning to Malaga and not staying here.
