LOCATION Parador Mazagon is about 6km south of Mazagon, 28km south of Huelva and 300m off the main road A494. FEATURES The hotel is set in beautifully tended lush green grounds, virtually isolated, surrounded by pine forests, and completely quiet apart from the roll of the breakers. The hotel is set back from a cliff and overlooks a stunning 7km long sandy beach. There's more beach out of sight. The beach is gently shelving which makes it huge at low tide. The beach in June was generally empty on weekdays and wonderful for walks. There is this Parador and that's it. There's pretty well nothing on the whole beach. Mind you it looks like it could get busy in high season. The distant queue of tankers out to sea lining up for a berth at Huelva provides things to look at. And in the grounds there are plenty of birds to provide entertainment. The Donana nature reserve with twice daily tours from El Acebuche is about 24km away. There is no direct bus service to the reserve. HOTEL FACILITIES The hotel was modernised in 2001 with splendid bathrooms. There is the usual Parador understated comfort. Service was excellent. Many rooms have a sea view. Outdoor pool from June 1st. Tennis. Bath towels and beach towels are provided. Reception sells sun cream etc. Gym and indoor pool in winter. Pool bar and water sports in high summer. Bicycles for hire particularly for use on the cycle path adjacent to the main Mazagon- Matalascanas road A494. [--] COMMS Mobiles and GPRS work. RESTAURANT Dinner from 2030hrs. The food is good.The local Huelva prawns are excellent. Gluten free and vegetarian menus are available. Some jolly good Rioja as well. Dress seems to be smart casual ie no shorts or t-shirts. Air conditioning in the restaurant can make it quite cool. Lunch in the dining room is much the same menu as dinner. Breakfast is also served in the dining room. Breakfast is largely self service and includes bacon, egg, raisins, prunes, hams, cheese, delicious lettuce, fruit... in other word: the works. The bar serves substantial snacks 1100 to 2300. BOOKING Full details on [--] ACCESS BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT By train from Seville to Huelva four times a day. One of those is a Talgo from Madrid. Then there is a 30 minute taxi drive to the Parador Mazagon. Taxis seem to dribble along to meet 1452hrs Talgo arrival, otherwise it may be a good idea to phone Huelva taxis 959 25 00 22 to book. There are some other taxi phone numbers on the rank outside the station. CLIMATE Located on the Atlantic so the area is prone to cooling breezes which can be nice when it is hot. The sunset in June is around 2200hrs as it is so far West. The evening sunshine reflecting off the waves is wonderful.
