"very sober and beautiful"
If you're looking for a real southern Spanish experience you could head for Ubeda, in the heart of the olive grove area of Andalusia. Ubeda is a small town with plenty of history in it with many of those who made it big in the discovery of America being local boys and building their mansions and churches there. My husband and I stayed at the parador in July 2004 at the end of our honeymoon and we loved the experience. The only drawback is the absence of an outdoor swimming pool - most paradores in southern Spain have one, but that wouldn't put me off staying there. The room we got had a very comfortable 4 poster bed and a huge marble bathroom. The patio in front of our room was very quiet. The building -as most paradores- has plenty of historical value. There's a nice restaurant at the parador with typical dishes from the area - particularly good hif you like game. The staff were very friendly, spoke very good English and made us feel very welcome.

"Beautiful Building, Friendly Staff"
Stayed one night here on the way from Granada to Toledo. The square on which the parador sits is a stunning collection of Renaissance palaces, and the parador is certainly one. Gorgeous colonnaded patio and rustic bar where we enjoyed local wines (gratis) while we waited for our room (10 min.) The room was extremely large and atmospheric (we booked a "special" room) with a large damask curtain separating the foyer/bathroom area from the living/bedroom area; wide carved stone frame over the double doors leading to a patio (shared with 2 other rooms) with fountain, big medieval-looking chandelier in the bedroom with fancy headboard and dark wood accents. Floors were tile inlaid with colorful painted heraldic symbols. Friendly front desk staff helped with luggage (unlike the experience of a previous post), helped with directions, and were generally very pleasant. Didn't eat a meal here so can't speak to the food. Ubeda is a quaint, beautiful, and off-the-tourist track town with stunning views of the countryside from the intact city walls. "Sleepy," but interesting and historically signficant, and a nice respite from the other tourist meccas of Andalusia.
