"Recommended"
We stayed here for 4 nights and felt it had been an excellent choice. OK, the immeadiate surroundings are not the most scenic, unless you have a strong interest in tower blocks, but there's a tram stop and an S Bahn station within 2 minutes walk.
Getting there from Schonefeld was easy - we took the S9 train to Treptower Park, then changed onto the S42 for 3 stops. (Tip - you can get the S9 to Ostkreuz but there you have a long walk to the S42 platform. At Treptower the platforms are adjacent.)
Our room was large, comfortable and well furnished, but what would hotel designers do without pale lemon paint and beech furniture? The bathroom was small by comparison but very well set out to make the best use of space.
We didn't take breakfast at the hotel (available for 10 Euros), but being cheapskates took a kettle and made use of the Kamps bakery in the shopping centre next door - ace pastry selection!
By the way, the Lidl supermarket others have mentioned has now closed, but die hard fans need only hop on the SBahn for 2 stops to Prenzlauer Allee.
Prenzlauer Berg is excellent for bars and restaurants - we particularly liked 'Frida Kahlo' and 'Endlos' - but if you want to stay local without using the hotel restaurant, the shopping centre has options. There's an Italian restaurant, or for something a bit different, a Bulgarian. Also, there's a 24 hour Kebab place, which we used before heading back to the airport - 4 kebabs, 4 drinks and attempted conversation with locals all for 14 Euros.
Overall, we were really pleased with the hotel. We didn't have much contact with the staff but when we did, found them efficient and helpful. They all speak good English and were polite enough not to cricicise my German. We would certainly consider staying here again on our next visit to Berlin.

"A wonderful Surprise in Berlin....."
This hotel was a great surprise!! The Staff was very friendly and helpful with helping us figure our way around town. The rooms were very spacious and very nice. The hotel is on the east side of Berlin but very close to the U-bahn and tram station!! The only down side is we wished the hotel was a bit closer to the sights but it is only a 15-20 min ride on the transit system. The breakfast was mostly cold items-cheeses, meats, yogurt, etc. but it was nice :)
I highly recommend this hotel for anyone going to Berlin

"Very good hotel, very good location, very good price"
Just finished 4 nites at this excellent hotel. I'd say that the hotel is more like a 4 star than 3 star, and that's just the accomodation. Add in the location, and I might score it even higher.
I paid a little less than $80/nite for an almost 2 room room (i.e. bedroom and sitting room didn't have a door between them, by they were very nearly separate.) Amenities (including 2 TVs and free daily bottled water) were nice surprises.
I found the location to be outstanding, though not for the view from the windows or the community - it's pretty plain. What was excellent, though, was the city access via public transport. With a tramstop (10 mins to Alexanderplatz about every 5 minutes) and S-bahn just outside, nowhere in the city was more than about 15 or 20 minutes away.
(On my getaway day, I took the S-bahn <10 minutes (to Beuchstrasse) to directly connect with the airport bus to Tegel to get to the airport in 15 minutes for 3.20 Euros.)
Staff & attention was good, with everyone speaking fluent English.
If I had to try to find a negative, the bathroom was a bit small, but came with better than average amenities.
Overall, I enjoyed my stay, and will now seek out other Park Plaza properties in the future.
