A bit grumpy
I booked the Pembridge Palace hotel after reading a couple of reviews on it. I have to admit that I was not quite pleased with the standard and service. I know that it is a 3-star rating, however, the shower drain was blocked so it meant that I had to run in and out of the shower before it overfloods, the bathroom sink could have done with a bit of sementing, and the bedroom window could have done with a bit of a wipe. Being there took me back to my university days as it was like residential halls more than a hotel service. I suppose, it was quite affordable and decent location within walking distance to many shops, restaurants, and the tube. My advice is: book a room there if you want to spend your whole day wondering around the city and not staying indoors, plus, obviously, if you are broke, yet you want to visit London. If you are like me, and you rely on first impressions when it comes to restaurants and hotels, please beware that it may not give you the best impression. However, upon complaining, they did act on things eventually. |

"A pleasant Surprise"
I had already booked the Pembridge when I read the reviews on this website and was horrified by the bad reports it had received. I would have cancelled if I could but with less than 2 days before our arrival we decided to at least look at the room. We arrived at 9am after 24 hours travelling expecting the worst and were very pleasantly surprised. I asked to see the room before checking in. It wasn't possible at that time because guests had not checked out but the manager suggested we help ourselves to the (all day free) tea/coffee in the lobby while we waited. About 11am (well before the advertised check in time), we looked at a room (121) on the first floor. Although very small it was certainly clean, overlooked the park and had quite nice decore. We ended up staying 6 nights and thought the Pembridge great value. The continental breakfast is self serve so quantity is unlimited. It consists of a choice of cereals, toast, cheese, jams, hard boiled eggs, tea and coffee.
We found the people working behind the desk most helpful....
immediately getting towels for me when I asked, and helping me make an international call (and then not charging me for it).
The Pembridge is an old building..for me that was part of its charm...but it comes with some maintance issues that you need to be able to overlook to enjoy your stay. Our ensuite was very clean but had 2 cracked tiles, the wardrobe was missing one of its door handles, the full length window onto the narrow balcony had to be held open with the chair. The location is great.. just off Bayswater Road... easy walking to Portabello Markets, Kensington Palace and Gardens and the Albert Hall. We also walked to Buckingham Palace, Harrods and the National Gallery. I felt perfectly safe walking walking in this area, even by myself at night. I would certainly go back to this hotel when in London but recommend trying to get there early in the day and asking to see the room before you book in... so you have some choice of room.
