Pestana Atlantic Bay
The fact that we've been back (just my missus & me, or with our four children, or with their partners as well) some 5 times should give you an idea of what we think of the place! Quiet hotel, nice helpful staff, easy walk to Funchal (c.1 hour - but we walk a lot as a family! Traffic free for around 2/3rds the distance) or free hotel bus, also very frequent and cheap public busses within 5 mins walk but taxis are not expensive for those late night returns. Good eating in the area (food at the hotel is reasonable but a bit 'international'. Excellent breakfast buffet will keep you going for the day). Uninterrupted views, and none of the rooms (as far as we can tell) are overlooked except on the ground floor so you can sleep in the buff with the curtains drawn, with impunity! No air-con (so no buzzing noise all night from the neighbours) and a climate that means leaving your patio door open (everyone's got a private balcony - except the ground floor who walk out into the gardens) and bathroom window is more than enough; lovely through draught. And the sound of the Atlantic on the pebble beach all night to lull you to sleep. If you've never been to Madeira - go. If you have been and weren't that taken by your hotel - try this one. We wouldn't stay anywhere else. If you can afford it, upgrade to one of the junior suites. Not much extra but you get a separate, generously sized sitting room and the sink / fridge / hob (why would you need that?) are in a separate alcove off the sitting room
