"Pleasantly Surprised"
My wife and I sayed at the Portland from March 8th through the 10th. We were nervous, to say the least, due to some of the reviews we read. The price and location helped in our decision to give it a try.
The hotel is small and you can see that it is old in structure but it seems that it was recently painted and some modern funiture in the lobby. The room we got was 305. The room was small but we knew that when we made the reservation. The room fits with the building, it is old and shows some wear and tear. However, the room was clean and the bed was in great shape. The towels were good and fluffy and the room was serviced everyday. There were a few good suprises that I did not expect. One is the coffee maker in the room I need my morning jolt, the cable TV, and choice to order a movie (Be careful there are fees for the movie). For this type of hotel I figured it would have been bare bones but the additional touches did help.
Overall we were happy with our stay. The room was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. The building is old but that we expected. We did not mind the size because we were out most of the time.
Overall I was Pleasantly surprised and enjoyed my stay. For the price I would stay there again on my next visit to ny.

"Portland Rocks"
I just got back from New York and I am planning my next trip as I write this. It was my first time staying at the Portland and I had a great stay. I usually stay on the east side at the On the ave Hotel. This time I wanted to be in the middle of it all and save a few bucks. The hotel was right in Times Square and it is true the rooms are small. But it was half the price that I usually pay at On the Ave so I was able to shop alot more. The staff was pleasant enough and they were always willing to offer suggestions on places to eat. The room was clean, old, but clean and the I slept well on the bed. The heating was a bit noisy but nothing a few drinks could't fix.
I will defenitly stay at the Portland Again.

I have stayed at this hotel over 10 times. I love this place. Clean rooms, great location and the best hotel deal in NYC.
Right down the street in TKTS booth, fifth ave and the resturant row, CLose to theathers.

"Perfectly good basic hotel soon to be revamped"
The excellent rating is for the value for money, we paid a total of £700 for two rooms for 4 people for 4 nights. Location brilliant, rooms as we expected for the money i.e small, basic, bit tatty fixtures and fittings but beds comfortable, room quiet and clean. Beds were changed daily as were towels although linen obviously not new. But hell, this is fantastic location and all we wanted was somewhere to sleep, New York keeps you going from breakfast to bedtime, no lounging around for us wasting money on facilities we don't need.
The staff were welcoming and helpful when we asked anything, but we are independant and not needy wingers!
Unfortunatly the proposed fancy renovations into a boutique hotel will probably put it out of our price range, otherwise we would return again!

"Perfect for budget travellers!"
Three times in New York, three times in Portland Square: we want a central location and a clean room and in this hotel we had it.
Location: 47th street, 30 second from Times square, the BEST at this price! (but not only at this price!)
Rooms: The first 2 times we obtained a room in a better position, you MUST make a request as soon as you book: ask for a room in the new wing of the hotel (east) the ones with the windows view on the 47th street.
This time we obtained a small room with a look into the staircase, but really clean
The price was increased, but it's the best in the zone!
We paied 130 us+tax per night (but in New years eve and the 1st of the year they doubled it, it's normal in NY)
