"Get More Than What You Pay For"
I didn't read the reviews until I had already booked the trip for my 25-year-old son and me. I'm 67, a New Yorker, happy with the subway systems of Paris and London last summer and fall, so the nearness of the Metro was a selling point. I ended up taking cabs everywhere anyway because the hotel was pretty close to town. My son took some busses--he was there three days before me--and he said I was better off not taking the bus. In LA, apparently everybody who isn't completely crazy has some sort of car. The staff were friendly and helpful, our rooms were clean and large. We didn't try the pool because of the time of year. The breakfast was good: fresh fruit (apples, oranges and bananas), four kinds of dry cereals, breads to toast, rolls and croissants and perfectly okay coffee, there from 7 to 9:30, free. This is a fine hotel for the price. I didn't see any of the "dodgy characters" mentioned by other reviewers, but I was told that what happens in neighborhoods like this one is that the police will come and round up all the crack dealers and addicts for awhile, so I might have just hit it at the right time. Also, coming from New York, I may be a little more sophisticated when it comes to seeing hard cases. A friend (we were there for the Grammy Salute to Jazz) stayed at a four-star hotel and just loved it, but she's going to be paying it off for a long time. If I were to go to LA again, I would definitely go to Quality Inn, unless I were to win the lottery, in which case I, too, would be at the four-star.
