"Great Hotel - Convenient, Clean, Helpful Staff, Concierage Great"
The Radisson is centrally located, has comfortable rooms and very helpful and cordial staff. The concierage was particularly outstanding. AC worked fine - even on hot humid days. Hotel seems to have additional soundproofing as one could hear no traffic noise from Nevsky Prospekt. I would definitely stay at this hotel again and highly recommend it.

"Solid 3+ to 4 star hotel, great location"
The Radisson is not a 5-star hotel but if you are looking to stay at a solid 3+ to 4 star hotel in a good location, this may be for you.
I looked at The Astoria and Grand Hotel Europe but could not justify the expense, especially as we got a pretty good bed and breakfast rate. It turned out that the breakfast was a well-stocked buffet and kept us filled up until nearly dinner time.
The room was clean and larger than, say, an average European hotel but smaller than a typical US-sized Radisson hotel room. They had the usual toiletries/amenities, mini-bar, etc - basically once you enter the room you could be in a Radisson anywhere in the world. The heated bathroom floor was a plus after walking in the snow all day! There is a fitness centre and sauna but sadly we didn't have any time to check it out.
The reception staff was friendly and offered us complimentary champagne on check-in; we didn't take too much advantage of the concierge as there were plenty of free guidebooks in the room and it was easy to find our way around. The airport transfer offered by the hotel was about US$15 more expensive than what we arranged ourselves but the taxis connected to the hotel were far newer cars than what we typically saw on the street. We asked the hotel to arrange a taxi to take us to dinner on our first night but I think we got ripped off - 500 rubles for a brief journey but we were still uncertain of our surroundings at that point.
The hotel is on the Eastern end of Nevsky Prospect, about 8-10 blocks from the end of the same street where most of the sights are located. Despite not literally being on the doorstep of the major attractions, we were only about an easy 10-15 minute stroll in chilly/snowy weather.
Again, don't expect a 5 star experience since this is not a "grand" hotel by any means but if you want a nice, clean hotel while on a short stay, this is an excellent choice.

"Friendly Staff, Good Food, Nice Room"
Our travel agent selected the Raddison SAS Royal Hotel for us, and I was impressed by its location on the Nevsky Prospect (more on this in a moment).
The hotel was extremely efficient in sending us the necessary paperwork to finalise our Russian visa application. When we arrived, we were met by friendly staff --- particularly Elena Donchenko, the Front Office Manager. The hotel was fully booked, but the public areas didn't seem crowded, nor did the staff seem stressed.
Our room was large and quiet (we were facing an inner air shaft, and not the road). The bed was comfortable, and the room was spotlessly clean. Only minor gripe: there could be better English TV --- but we didn't come to St. Petersburg to watch television.
Because I have difficulty walking, we ate many of our meals in the hotel. My wife and I found the breakfast buffet to be fine (and I'm not a great fan of hotel breakfast buffets). You could squeeze your own orange juice, and if you ordered an omlette it came out piping hot from the kitchen. Dinner in the Barbazan restaurant was great. I'm from Hawaii, the land of abundant sashimi: but I found the sashimi/ceviche starter to be excellent. And, of course, the vodka-caviar-blini combo was A+.
We were robbed twice on the Nevsky Prospect: both times on nice sunny spring days, and in the main part of the Nevsky Prospect. One day the thieves took my camera, the second they took my wallet. The hotel (with the assistance of Elena and the General Manager, Gaston Gellens) got their own head of security involved, a tall dignified gentleman named Alexander. He summoned the police to the hotel, and the necessary reports were filed. Mr. Gellens even bought Marjorie and me dinner.
I'm not sure Marjorie and I will be racing back to St. Petersburg anytime soon. It's a gorgeously breathtaking city, and The Hermitage is all we expected --- and more. If we do go back, we'll definitely stay at the Raddision SAS Royal Hotel.
We also found a great guide: Maria Smolentseva (m_smolentseva@mail.ru). She took us to the police station to finalise the paperwork, and made us feel a lot better about our visit to St. Petersburg.

"Please in St. Petersburg"
My wife and I stayed at the SAS Radisson in March of 2004 while visiting St. Petersburg for vacation. I was very pleased with the hotel staff, facilities and service. The location on the Nevsky Prospekt was good but it was some distance (20 minute walk) from the Hermitage and other St. Petersburg sites. This was the only negative from our visit.
The staff was very helpful in setting up our agenda, arranging tours, and making sure that everything was right. The prices for the tours and the service provided was excellent. In addition the rooms were clean, well kept, and large.
I would highly recommend this hotel if you are visiting St. Petersburg.

"Great Hotel & Staff"
We have just come back from 3 nights in St Petersburg - at the Radisson SAS. We had a lovely time. The hotel was lovely, as were the staff. The porter who took our luggage to our room gave us suggestions of things to do along with a map and booklet. The room was great, everything you could want (bathrobes, slippers, mini bar - beds are turned back in the evening - really nice little touches). The breakfasts were good. We used Concierge for booking trips (city tour, trip to Tsarkoe Selo & Pavlosk, Marlinsky Theatre and dinner reservation along with car). They lady we dealt with was friendly and efficient. Thoroughly recomnend the trips, though they were a little pricy. The bar food was good as was the service (you have to try the hot chocolate!). It was probably one of the quietest hotels I have stayed in at night. There was no door banging - or anything like that (and the hotel seemed busy at breakfast). Our room faced the main road and even the traffic didn't keep me awake. I had my doubts about this hotel after reading previous reviews, but it was excellent. We would definitely go back and would recommend it to people.
