"the location is excellent"
The first thing you'd say about Ramada Birmingham City Hotel is that the location is excellent. A few minutes walk from the main shopping areas of the city centre, the same distance from Birmingham New Street, and 30 seconds walk to The Mailbox and the high class shopping and very good selection of resturants it offers. Also, if you just fancy getting a bottle of wine for yourself, and not pay hotel prices, it has a Tesco Metro practically next door. I'd say the only thing to be a little wary of is the food. Although the service was excellent, the food wasn't great.

"Canal side living"
Good location at rear of Mailbox overlooking the refurbished canal basin. Expensive parking in the modern basement of The Mailbox shopping centre immediately adjacent to hotel but unless you know where the hotel is, if you arrive by car without directions you would probably have trouble finding the roadside entrance as the canal entrance is only for pedestrians. There is layby beside the road entrance but its usually fully parked. You would have to double park and block the road while your companion unloaded the luggage and took it into the hotel. If you park under The Mailbox then its easy to trundle your cases via the car parklift and through the shopping centre to reach the hotel via the canal entrance.
Rooms are pleasantly decorated in pastel mint green and blue and are modern, clean and functional. Bathroom trifle small but nice. Good large shower compartment as opposed to bath and clingy shower curtain so often found in hotels. Doors close quietly which makes a change - who wants to hear doors slamming in the early hours of the morning.
Breakfast is reasonable with hot and cold offerings although it has a cafe "feel" with basic tables and chairs although there is a large flat screen TV quietly on at one end.
I have stayed in this hotel several times this year and have no complaints other than the building work immediately opposite which starts at an early hour. However, this will cease once the building has been completed. There are several restaurants adjacent the hotel and the canal network is charming. Very close to Broad Street nightlife, the NIA and the Bullring and shopping centre.
Good location, nice clean hotel, particularly ideal for lone woman travellers as good pasta and piza restaurant right next door (not to mention the convenient tiny tesco store on the other side if you are happy to have just a sausage roll and yoghurt for dinner).
Its just been taken over by Ramada. Lets hope it does not deteriorate. If you plan to arrive by car make sure you get a map beforehand!

"Pleasant suprise"
Booked this hotel fairly last minute as other plans fell through. Was slightly hesitant having seen some of the more recent reviews but as I was out for dinner in the Mail Box that night it seemed very convenient and was only for one night.
Parked car in Mail Box car park as hotel had no car park £15 24 hr charge a little steep but very secure parking. People has commented on how difficult it was to find the hotel but from the car park it was clearly marked and we has no trouble finding it.
Check in was effortless and staff were pleasant. The room we had was very neat and tiday. The bed was probably only double size and not king but not really a problem. From the room we also had very good views of the wheel and views towards symphony hall.
I would happily stay here again and would recommend it to others.
