LOCATION
The Riviera Hotel is situated 50 m from the sandy "Lido" beach and 800 m from the historic old town and picturesque harbour. Alghero is situated on the north-western coast of Sardinia within the homonymous gulf.
A large part of its territory stretches on the Nurra plain; at the western point of it, rises the karst-formation of Capo Caccia, Punta Giglio and Monte Doglia. On its southern point, lays the vast tableland of Villanova Monteleone made up of volcanic hills. From the hills of Villanova Monteleone, passing through the fertile plain, flow down several rivers which, since distant ages, have made possible human settlings in that area. The town of Alghero is surrounded by plentiful olive grove and vineyards whose products once, made up the basic local economy of the town.

"Perfect for what we wanted"
My boyfriend and I spent a week in the Hotel Riviera at the end of June. We found it to be a very pleasant hotel and perfect for what we were looking for. We paid 95 euros per night for a double room on the third floor with a sea view and a balcony, breakfast and air conditioning were also included. We booked directly with the hotel via email - they do all speak fluent English though so it would be fine to book by phone too. We took a taxi from the airport which was about a 15 minute journey and cost 20 euro.
Our main criteria for choosing a hotel was that it was a convenient base for the week. We wanted to be within walking distance of the town and the beach. We also wanted a pool - there are not that many hotels with pools in Alghero so this was one of the main reasons that we chose the Riviera.
The hotel is not luxurious but it was perfect for what we were looking for. Our room was extremely clean and spacious. There was a daily maid service and the shower was fairly powerful with no shortage of hot water.
The pool area of the hotel was lovely. There are lots of sunloungers and there are umbrellas and shady areas available for those who wish to get out of the sun. The pool itself was really clean and big enough to be able to have a decent swim in.
We had breakfast 6 out of the 7 days that we were there. It was a standard European continental breakfast with meat, cheese, fruit, yogurt and pastries on offer. We didn't eat in the hotel in the evening - and can't really understand why anyone would. One of the main highlights of our holiday was the abundance of excellent restaurants on offer in Alghero.
We walked into the old town every night and didn't eat in the same restaurant twice. The best meals that we had were at Paradiso (Via Principe Umberto) which served beautiful meat dishes, and Andreini (Via Arduino) which is extremely romantic and the food was delicious. Andreini was the most expensive restaurant we ate in but well worth it.
We had delicious pizza and pasta at Bella Napoli on Piazza Cevica and the small kiosk on the square serves amazing ice cream.
There is one place that I would not recommend – Arteneu which is situated on the town walls. The food was OK, but we felt that we were being rushed through our meal so they could free our table from the moment we sat down. In addition it was overpriced (expected really due to location) but they also overcharged us. The toilets were also pretty unpleasant.
We just wanted to relax for the week that we were there and spent most days on the Mia Pia beach which is loads nicer than the Lido beach and only a 10 minute walk down the road. There were also nice snack bars where you can get lunch. One of the best days that we had on holiday was on boat trip that left from Alghero marina. We booked this on the harbour but they do have a website too (---). We went out for the full day and really enjoyed the whole experience. The boat is a beautiful old sailing ship and we were taken out round the coastline. We were provided with a delicious lunch and had ample opportunity to go swimming (they also had snorkelling gear onboard that we were able to hire). Geoff and Vivien who own the boat were really welcoming and informative about the area.
We had a really relaxing holiday in Alghero, I would recommend it to anyone who likes good weather and excellent food. If you want to see more of the island than we did you will probably need to hire a car
