The history of this convent is long and fascinating...

San Francesco Al Monte Hotel monastery was founded in the 16th century by Friar Agostino da Miglionico, a 'poor monk' of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, also called 'Barbanti' for their flowing beards. Friar Agostino built a small cell in the bowels of the mountain that, with time, grew into a more comfortable monastery.

There are still important traces of the past that contribute to the enchantment of the place, such as the Chapel of San Giovan Giuesppe della Croce, the patron saint of Ischia of vibrant religious fervour, who passed the last twelve years of his life at Santa Lucia al Monte. He died in the monastery and is buried there: his cell, still impregnated with his memories, has been faithfully preserved and can be visited.

Evocative and important spaces from the ancient complex have been skilfully preserved, such as the oven where the bread was baked and the frescoed refectory that still seems to resound with the far-off echo of the prayers and readings that accompanied mealtimes.

Here and there you will find fragments of frescoes, old majolica and decorations that testify to the place's artistic heritage.

* La Terrazza:
Guests can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine in an elegant setting with spectacular views of the Gulf of Naples. The restaurant is open from the 1st May to the 30th September.

* ''La Cantinetta dei Barbanti'':
A restoration recovered the monastery's ancient wine cellar: this space was used to create 'La cantinetta,' an evocative spot decorated in a minimal-chic style without betraying its original vocation. It features period wrought iron tables and transparent Plexiglas chairs designed by Philippe Stark. There is an open selection of bottles of red and white wines.

* The seventh floor, where the hotel touches the green hill of San Martino, contains the swimming pool and the garden: it is an oasis of well-being and peace with a breath-taking view. This sinuously shaped pool extends along the terrace, which is equipped with deck chairs and open-air sitting rooms. A second, smaller pool, cut from the tuffaceous rock, offers hot water and beneficial jets.

* The terrace features a hanging garden of rare beauty: the ancient gardens cultivated by the friars have been preserved with their walkways and bowers. A swimming pool was installed in the most scenic spot, carved out of the tuffaceous rock, almost camouflaged by the rocks and greenery. A second pool, with hot water and hammam, awaits guests in a hidden grotto.

* The hotel's 4 meeting rooms, which are equipped for any type of event, preserve the fascination of the old rooms from which they were derived. All are with telephone, modem plugs, audio & video system, screen projector, videoconference, system for simultaneous translations, secretary service.
