Scandic Grand Marina Hotel, originally built in the early 20th century as a harbour warehouse, charms guests with its setting. Each building in the Katajanokka district has a unique history. "Great business hotel that works for tourists too"
We used Hilton Honors points for a free night at this hotel, which was on the harbor. It's a big hotel with lots of amenities -- including a well stocked gift shop and an excellent breakfast buffet. The room was fine -- typical of the Scandic properties.
Being on the harbor, the hotel is ideal if you are coming into or out of Helsinki via the cruiselines or ferries. Market Square (where all the tourist souvenir shopping takes place) and the Esplanade (main pedestrian thoroughfare) are a short walk away.

After reading the mediocre reviews on this site I was a bit concerned about what to expect from this hotel. I really needn't have been! My boyfriend and I stayed there for a week and I absolutely loved it! We had a superior room with a chair, sofa, two tables, dressing table, two sets of wardrobes and four sets of windows! The bathroom was spacious with 2 sinks and different compartments separated by sliding doors for the toliet and the shower. I was also very impressed with the heated towel rail! :)
Normally if I go away with my boyfriend we stay in hostels but when I go away with my parents my mother always insists on 4/5 star so I have stayed in all sorts of accomodation in the past but I have to say this hotel was my favourite!
The breakfasts were great with a wide selection on fresh/dried fruit, cheeses, cold meats, toast, bacon, eggs, biscuits, muffins, tea/coffee and fruit juices. And you can eat as much as you want! Wonderful to set you up for a day of exploring!
In reference to location, this hotel is only ever so lightly located outside the main city centre, the market square is probably less that a five minute walk and it would normally take us about ten to get to the main shopping streets. It is quite a distance though from sights such as the Rock Church, it is walkable but would take a while so it's probably better to take the tram. I'm normally really lazy back home but we had no problem walking to the centre and back in the day and once again when we went out in the evening.
As for value for money we were very lucky with this hotel, we paid just over £300 for seven nights accomodation and flights so it was definitely worth it!. I would recommend this hotel to anybody who doesn't mind a short walk to the shops/restaurants, but I would recommend getting a superior room if possible! We really enjoyed our week there....the only downside was the bed was a bit too comfy which meant it was difficult to get up in the mornings! A great hotel.
