Sealight Resort Hotel - Know what to expect
Booking, Arrival & Reception: We booked through Sunshine in the UK and requested a double room with sea view. The room we were allocated faced directly onto the balconies of the rooms from their newly built extension - Far from the sea view we were hoping for. The member of staff who brought our luggage to the room, was quick to point out to us that if you stand in a specific location you can in fact see the sea. To top it all off, the room had two single beds, not a double. As we have read on the forums how friendly and helpful the hotel staff and management are, we decided to ask if they could change our room. What a futile and disappointing exercise that turned out to be. The lady at reception told us that there was nothing she could do for us as it was purely a request, not a guarantee! We asked to see the manager, who to our surprise and disappointment had exactly the same response, apart from adding that that the hotel had over 90% occupancy. I would have at least expected him to show some sympathy and to offer a look at some of the other rooms that were in fact available – but he was in stead quite dismissive. The manager then suggested that we return after 3 days when he may have something to offer, our stay was 7 days. From that point on, we found the reception staff to be very abrupt and dismissive. During our stay we also wanted to know the price of a local call from our room – no one, including the manager could tell us – but I am sure they will know what to charge us if we had made the calls. We ended up going into the centrum(town centre) and bought a calling card from the post office at 3.75 YTL Food: We had absolutely no complaints about the quality and variety of food in the main dining area - “Sunrise Restaurant” where the service would vary from poor to excellent, depending on who would be serving you. The A-la-carte restaurants where a different story. Going from best to worst, we would highly recommend to Chinese restaurant – the food was good and the service was what you would expect from a 5 star establishment. This was also reflected in their “comments book”. The Italian was on nearly par with the Chinese restaurant. The seafood restaurant cannot be beaten on location – Having dinner whilst watching the sun set over Samos island. The food was OK, but we left there feeling hungry. The service has a lot of room for improvement. As for the traditional Turkish restaurant – STAY AWAY! It is seriously a waste of time. There is nothing we like more than learn about other people's traditions. So what a great opportunity this could have been. Although it is a set menu, we would have liked to have had some information at least on what we were getting. In stead there was no information on what we were getting, neither how you should eat it. Asking the staff about the food was pointless(we tried), as they could not tell us. The food started with what we think was a cold starter(four small platters – raw onions, parsley, two chillies and some white creamy dill mixture), or were we supposed to wait for the rest of the meal to use this as an accompaniment. The service was diabolical. We ordered the same drinks 3 times – the first time, we waited but nothing. So we asked again, then we saw another member of staff with our drinks, go to the wrong table. When they told her it was not for them, she took it back to the kitchen. Finally we asked again for drinks and after a short few minuted we got it. By this time there were only 3 -4 tables in the restaurant, but about 5 staff. We eventually, like some other tables, got up and left... not knowing if there was anything else, maybe desert, maybe different types of food. Quite sad that we had such a bad experience in their traditional restaurant. Room: The room was of an acceptable standard, but we had to ask housekeeping to restock the minibar and shampoos etc on a daily basis. Because they do not replace if there is anything left. The beds were very uncomfortable – We took the duvets out of the cupboard to use as padding on the beds, which helped. The air-conditioning only works when your key card is in the slot, this means that you cannot let the room cool down whilst out having dinner – you have to be in the room while the aircon is running. This is not very healthy either. General Hotel: Overall, the location is great, some of the staff give you good friendly service and the food is good. However, if you are looking for 5 star service and facilities, this is hotel is not recommended. If you are from the UK, be careful what you change your pounds to. At the time of our visit the exchange rate from pound to Turkish Lira was £1 = 2YTL and £1 = 1.27 Euro. All additional costs for watersport are in Euro and if you have Turkish cash, they use an exchange rate of 1 Euro = 2 YTL. That means we would have lost about 12% paying in Turkish cash. This is the same outside the resort as well. There are two minibus services outside the hotel that go the the town centre – the number 5 and Number 10. They cost us 2YTL per person per trip(same as in London). You may be tempted to get off early, but if you are looking for the Grand Bazaar, Post office etc. stay on until you see the waterfront on your right. If you go past the harbor entrance, you have gone to far.
