"Beautiful Gmunden on the lake"
We have stayed at Seehotel Schwan both in 2001 and 1998. The hotel sits directly on the lake in Gmunden in the heart of town and some rooms have terraces overlooking the water and mountains. It offers large pleasant accommodations and the restaurant overlooking the lake is very good and serves a continental type menu. There are sightseeing boats anchored in front of the hotel that depart several times a day and a trip around the lake should not be missed. We would highly recommend a visit to Gmunden and the Seehotel Schwan.

"Just as we hoped for"
We chose our hotel carefully to be on a lake, near a railway station, with good Trip Advisor reviews, and outside the heavily visited tourist areas. This led us to the Schwan and we were not disappointed. Trains run hourly to the main lines to the North and South and a tram links the station to the town until about 8 pm. Train connections were very good and we never missed one despite some trains running late. We don't like speaking English all the time on holiday although our German is not good, Gmunden and the Schwan gave us the right blend of German as normal with English when we needed it, including a good doctor. The Noestlinger family and staff were very helpful. The hotel atmosphere was good and the menu interesting, lots of good Austrian dishes. A la carte had English translations but the Tageskarte required us to learn some new words and phrases. Our room was one of the smallest but plenty large enough for us. There are suites in the corners that are truly enormous. There is a view right down Traunsee lake in contrast to most other hotels in the town – there are some nice-looking hotels on the west side but these are under the hills (Grunberg and Traunstein) so they do not have a view of these 2 fine mountains as the Schwan does. Tuesday was a particular delight as we awoke to find a market had sprung up in the square with all kinds of foods and other products. Breakfast and Lunch that day were particularly busy and interesting as there were more visitors than usual. In September the town is quiet after 9 pm but the hotel serves food until 10. The hotel had the customary Austrian traits of quilts on the beds (these can be a bit difficult to manage for temperature) and subdued lighting. If you want to stay in touch there is a reliable Internet PC on site at moderate cost, and there is an ATM right outside the door. Apart from a small sign in the bathroom, and small logos on the soap, we saw no sign that this is a Best Western and it was not listed on the BW website, but it is as good as BW we have stayed in elsewhere. We took easy day trips by tram, train, bus and/or boat to Halstatt, Traunkirchen, St Wolfgang, and Salzburg. We tried the Goldener Brunner for dinner one night. We got the English Menu - the items were of good quality and familiar to English diners but there was not the same range as at the Schwan. By contrast we ate in the Schwan 4 times and would have gone again if we didn't have to travel home. Breakfast was excellent.
