"WOW!!!!"
I cannot echo the other positive comments enough and stress what a great hotel and stay my family had at the Sheraton Bilbao.
Pros
- Location, location, location
- Beautiful building
- Very very helpful staff (they were better than most concierges)
- HUGE bathroom with large bathtub and amenities
- Nice bar, reasonable prices, loved the chocolate covered peanuts that came with drinks.
- Breakfast buffet was excellent. Not the usual items an american would be used to, but excellent ham, breads, cheese, cereals, rolls, fresh juices, waters, sweet items and service in a great modern-design restaurant.
- Excellent recognition for elite members of the SPG program.
Cons:
- Parking is confusing, not many people seem to park at the hotel.
- No ramp at hotel entrance makes luggage up the 5-6 steps tricky.
- Pricing not apparent on wi-fi, you have to get a code from the desk.
Advice:
- The mall across the street (Zubairte) has all your international chains, but is modern, clean and the grocery store in the basement is handy.
- Use the tram vs the metro, you get a better view of the great city. Tram stops 2 blocks from the hotel.
- Allow enough time to visit the Guggenheim, maybe one at night a |

"Art and Architecture"
We can echo all the positive remarks in the previous reviews for this hotel.
The building is a novel design with a large atrium and fast glass lifts, the bedrooms are spacious, the beds really are "sweet sleeper" as claimed, the bathroom has marble elegance, and the buffet breakfast has plenty of choices.
We were suprised to find the restaurant not available for dinner one night (it was "All Saints Day" - a national holiday) but the concierge was able to book us a table at a nearby restaurant (Guria) which we can recommended for sampling traditional basque fare.
For "Art and Architecture" this is a key destination with this hotel playing its part along the waterfront from the Guggenheim and if you manage to visit before the end of February 2006 the special exhibition "ArchiSculpture" at the Guggenheim completes the picture.

"Almost a Five Star"
Very cool design but they forgot a ramp at the entrance, and with no bell hop in site Friday at 1 PM up the entrance steps with my own luggage did I go. Seems there is an elevator to street level but not sure it's for guests? Check in and front desk personnel very pleasant, though upon arrival the sole worker was dealing with the phone too. A dedicated concierge would be helpful but the front desk crew helped me with reservations and directions efficiently.
The whole hotel was very clean and well kept. The bedding was superb and they came up with feather pillows quickly. A big gold star to whoever did the venting: even after a long hot steamy shower (in the very large, bathtub is separate, walk in shower) the mirror was not fogged at all !!!! Bedside buttons operate the separate sheer and opaque shades built into the window frame completely blackening the room.
There are two free DSL computers for guests with WiFi in the guest lounge area. The one that did not have Word was the one connected to the laser printer, frustrating me a bit after writing a long letter.
The pool was open, the gym very well equipped and there were lockers with keys for guests to store their stuff. Bathrobes in the rooms would have been a useful touch!
Lunch in the Chillada lounge was terrific and fairly priced, breakfast was pricey, the selection good but not for the price.
Next morning it did take 3 calls to get room service which would've been more upsetting if I was in a rush.
Construction on the park south side continues but there didn't seem to be any noise.
Overall very high marks....and I am still amazed at the price I got on Sheraton's own web site!!! |
