"Nice hotel, location not great"
Booked this through AUCTIONAIR, the charity auction site. It took some finding, and is down a small side street, which is not the most salubrious area. The hotel was lovely, quaint but very smart, comfortable room, and nice touches, like fruit in the room etc. However, we did not manage to eat dinner in the restaurant, because it never seemed to be open! A good base though, not too far from the centre.

"Decent hotel, good location"
We booked the Sofitel through Expedia. No problems with the booking. They were expecting us when we turned up. Nice lobby. Comfortable seating.
Our room was on the 1st floor. Decent size, soft comfortable bed. Far too many pillows. We requested non-feather pillows upon arrival at the hotel but this could not be provided. No noise pollution at all.
The main negative issue with the room was the window which opened out onto a sort of courtyard. It meant there was very little light coming into the room. Not really a problem as we were out all day but would have been nice to draw back the curtains in the morning and get some sunshine coming in.
Bathroom was clean. Decent shower. Nice towels. Room service decided to take the 2 used bath towels and replace them with only 1! Soon rectified with a call to reception.
The location is great. You can walk to Plaza de Espana in 2 minutes and take the metro anywhere in Madrid. The price with expedia was decent.
So overall - a decent hotel for a short visit to Madrid. Good location, comfortable rooms. Make sure to request one with outside window(s).

"Great location and very comfortable beds"
We stayed at the Sofitel Plaza Espana for 3 nights in early June. Our room had a king size bed which was one of the most comfortable hotel beds I have ever slept in ! Our room faced the inside courtyard which was great since it allowed for a really dark room in the morning and a good sleep-in (we were on vacation). Bathroom was very functional and nicely decorated and had an excellent shower.
The only negatives were the peeling paint from the bathroom ceiling over the bathtub / shower (no big deal but it does not look very nice) and I found the hotel a little noisy (slamming doors, housekeeping activities…).
Overall, a very nice hotel with a great location in downtown Madrid, within walking distance of major sights and steps away from the subway (Ventura Rodriguez station). I would definitely stay there again.
