Splendide Royal Hotel, opened in 1902 at the south end of town, next to the lake and on the grounds of the Villa Merlina, a 19th century villa known (1887) for its spectacular gardens.

The owners, the Fedele family enlarged the existing structure and opened a 125-bed hotel, originally called the Hotel Splendide.

The hotel soon gained a steady clientele among the wealthy Europeans who frequented this summer resort.

In 1977 an Italian hotel company bought the hotel from the Fedele family and in 1983 they added a new wing with 53 guest rooms.

Today it is known as Lugano's foremost hotel, with 96 guest rooms and a staff of 100 employees who provide meticulous personal service.

The hotel inspires loyalty among its clients, more than half the guests here are usually repeat visitors.

The influence of Italian culture is quite dominant in the city of Lugano, sitting on the shore of Lago di Lugano just across the lake from Italy.

The area is now the largest resort in the Swiss canton of Ticino, as well as Switzerland's third-largest banking center.
LOCATION

Splendide Royal Hotel is ideally located in Lugano, sophisticated tourist destination and business centre, a few steps from the lake, and 10 minutes on foot from the old centre.
PROPERTY AMENITIES

* The breakfast buffet is served from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. in the breakfast room. The continental breakfast is served from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. in the guests room.

* For an important business lunch or a romantic dinner in Lugano, at the Splendide Royal the ever-present light, sounds and scents of the lake and the surrounding nature form a marvellous accompaniment to the delicate flavours of the refined Mediterranean Cuisine of the "La Veranda" Restaurant.

* The indoor swimming pool has an oval form. It is 8m x 12m large, 80cm to 180cm deep and the water heated at a temperature of 28°C. The area also includes two saunas, a solarium and a small fitness corner.

* The Hotel Splendide Royal provides the right elegant venue for all occasions: working meeting, group seminary, plenary session, wedding reception, cocktail, business lunches, gala dinners.
ROOM AMENITIES

* 88 rooms, 55 of them with lake view. 6 Suites and 2 Junior Suites, lake view. The Junior Suites have a Jacuzzi and one of the Suites a Turkish steam shower.

* Each room features an ensuite bathroom with hairdryer and is equipped with air-conditioning, satellite TV, pay TV, mini bar, safe, direct dial telephone and wireless Internet access.

* The executive rooms have a balcony or terrace with panoramic view over the lake.

"Everything was excellent."
What a fabulous hotel! The staff was friendly and helpful. Our room was in the newer section. It was large (for Europe) with a large bathroom. The amenities were incredible. Great location on the lake with a 15 minute walk to downtown Lugano. Would stay here again, and again, and again.

Excellent service, location, food and atmosphere. Our room and lounge area was elegantly furnished, the large balcony looked out onto the lake and the view was spectacular. The old city was a short walk away, short enough to walk with our two year old daughter. The promenade in front of the the hotel seems to carry on for kilometers - we did not manage to walk it from beginning to end. The indoor heated pool was a winner with our daughter, the hotel supplied swimming wings and rings for toddlers. We would most definitely recommend this hotel. The only point that we might feel negative about is the limited english television.

"You found the right hotel in Lugano"
Stay here as we did in May 2007. The location is perfect, the service, well what do you expect from a Leading Hotels Of The World Hotel? Traditional european decoration with warm service and fantastic or shall we say splendid in every way. The Concierge would do everything for you, including reserving a hotel in Bellagio. A little hint, take the ride into Ascona for dinner at Le Pilot or something similar, on the lakes promenade.
